Maternity send off at work

My workplace would like to arrange a send off for my maternity leave, I WFH so it will be via video call with about 30+ people.

I know people mean well but I hate being centre of attention and would rather leave quietly without the fuss of a team call. Do I sound stuck up asking them to not go ahead with arranging this?

I know they’re trying to do a nice thing, it’s just I find the attention so overwhelming. Not to mention my colleagues are super nosey and I don’t like to be put on the spot! I’ll have a think about it

My work did similar, except it was face to face. I dreaded it but it was actually really lovely and I didn’t feel like I was in the spotlight too much x

On my last office day my team brought a cake in and a big hamper full of stuff for me and baby. Whilst it was lovely and I appreciate it so much, I wanted the ground to swallow me up cos it’s hate attention 🤣🥹

I had this and was kinda dreading it, being a Teams call with a similar amount of people. It was actually nice in the end, even being a Teams call which I always think are more awkward/unnatural than being done face-to-face. My advice as someone who also hates attention, don't overthink it and just join the call it'll be over as soon as it starts x

Do what is right for you - if it was face to face slightly different but everyone online at once can be stressful! I’ve done the same and told my managers no as don’t want to be centre of attention online with no where to go take 5 mins if needed!

Nope I would have hated that! But you actually might quite like it when it does happen!

I’ve said they can go ahead and organise a send off, even though I am absolutely dreading it might actually give me a confidence boost haha!

It's the right thing to do Incognito, as awkward as these things are for some of us. I just faked my way through mine, and thought about how much worse an in-person one would be!
