Redundancy

I’ve just been told I’m being made redundant and currently 16 weeks pregnant.

Has anyone else been in this situation before? Trying to figure out next steps! X

I would have a look into this as I don’t think it’s allowed and the government brought out this thing to protect us against this.

I had a friend who was made redundant just before her maternity leave started and she was entitled to her normal redundancy payout, plus everything she would have been paid throughout her maternity leave all in one lump sum in her last pay. Not sure about the exact rules though sorry, good luck with next steps!

I’d suggest calling either ACAS or Pregnant then Screwed Charity they run a free hotline which helps pregnant women on all workplace issues, the call handlers are employment solicitors by trade. You are protected when pregnant, as they your employer needs to try and reallocate you if your role is completely going but they need to prove the role is 100% gone without being liable. Sorry I cant be of further help but pregnant then screwed helped me win a case against a past employer when I was made redundant after I had my daughter

Were they aware of your pregnancy?

I was made redundant at 5 weeks pregnant. At that time I was told they were allowed to do it since it was my role at risk and not the fact that I was pregnant. Not even I knew it… I’ve found out on a Saturday morning and been told about redundancy on Monday first thing.

For me it was a blessing, even though it didn’t feel like that at that time.

I managed to find a new job in that week, got my package paid, didn’t work during garden leave (1st trimester was terrible!) and managed to put a deposit down for a house with my package.

I ended up going back to that company after my mat leave and I’m getting ready for my 2nd mat leave.

I know it can be sooo scary but redundancy is not rejection but redirection!

Don’t give up and carry on! There’s help and other jobs out there xx
