Hey mamas. I’m so exhausted and so worried for my daughter. She’s 7 months old and she’s always had some issues pooing. Now starting solids at 5.5 months I understand her stool is a bit more solid and may be a little harder to pass. However, she cries and scream’s and moves so much to try and push. What comes out is a small solid ball, but that’s just the first, after that it takes about 3-4 more times to try and push but she takes breaks in between which are all hard bigger balls, I’m also worried one of these days she’s gonna tear something. So my question is, her doc suggested prunes pears peas, anything that starts with a P everyday but it hasn’t helped. I need something to soften it to make it easier to pass. Has anyone been through this with their lo ? Is this normal? What should I do? Not to mention because of her tummy always hurting it makes her not sleep properly and then messes up her whole schedule. I’ve been struggling to get her in her crib and it always gets messed up bc she wants me to hold her bc she’s uncomfortable. Which last night I couldn’t even sit down holding her I stood up pretty much the whole night.

Biogaia probiotic. Way better than stool softeners

Please don't give her miralax if it's ever suggested... There's a class action lawsuit because of the behavioural effects it's having on kiddos.
I's ask about supplemental magnesium but I'm not sure beyond that since she's so little

I have a 3 month old with the same issue I mix 2 oz of prune juice with 2 oz of water and when we got to day 11 I added laxatives to the mix I’d recomend talking to your doctor first but it’s all depending on their weight

There's a Facebook group which might be helpful! Parents Against Miralax
Restoralax Movicol (PEG 3350)
There are so many parents who have been where you are in the group and might be able to help!!

Why would parents be against PEG?

it apparently has the potential to cause behavioural changes

@Kc they've been accused of it for years. The dr recommended it for my son years ago, and when I checked it out, they had tons of accusations already, so we went another route. This time with my daughter, we got her the probiotics. Her pediatrician said that they give them to babies at the nicu he works at, and she isn't constipated anymore. I just give her a couple drops every couple days and she's good.

I’ve only had to use it once luckily but good to know thank you for the heads up

Our pediatrician always recommended prune nectar first. That wasn't super helpful for us so he told us to use lax a day but yes the dosage amount should be discussed with a Dr.

Try more water along with either BF or formula, and water down the cereal more. Don't make it stiff. Also as others suggested Try prune juice or like a prune pouch..don't give her to much Banana and if doing cereal make sure it's oats not rice. Oat has more fiber. Try boiling some apples too

Thank you all for the advice, I have bio Gaia I’ll try giving it to her again everyday. I don’t feel as if it’ll help soften it though, I do give her yogurt with some fruit in the afternoon as a probiotic too.

Are you giving her water? That helped my daughter

Totally agreed with
Stop giving her mashed bananas or any sort of banana intake. And no rice intake (rice cereal or anything).
Simple prune puree - not mixed with anything. Any good baby food brand prune puree should do the trick.
Prunes have always did wonders for my baby’s severe constipation.
Also start giving her clean water (boiled and cooled down to room temperature) with spoon.
And the last two things for her tummy pains, give her 2-4 times in 24 hours, 1ml of gripe water. And give her tummy gentle rub and massage a few times as well.
Hopefully these tricks will work. I know how hard and stressful it can be 😞.

My daughter really struggled with this. On top of implementing prunes, P food, giving more water and avoiding rice, bananas and cheese, my doctor recommended cutting up a glycerin suppository just to help with the backlog of stool.

Bio Gaia probiotic helps a lot

@Maria I use 5 drops daily of the bio gaia with my daughter when she gets bad, then 2 drops a day after poops have returned to normal for maintenance. It's made a world of difference for us.

She might also benefit from a trip to the chiropractor.
I hope her bowel movements improve soon ❤️

My son is 8 months and started solids at 6 months. He also has a hard time pooping. It is getting better but for a while he would scream when he had to go. I asked the pharmacist who had said to avoid bananas as that could stop him up. It was recommended to try prune juice, and or prune baby food.

My daughter had the same problem when she started solids. I got prune puree pouches. She would eat half a pouch a day. By day 5 or 6, there would be an explosive poop which is not hard. But I never gave her on a regular basis. I was scared that she would get dependent on it. So on the side I introduced lots of fruits in her diet. She loved frozen berries from costco, which helped her a lot.
I hope something works for your daughter. Best of luck.

I am with every solid she eats

Thank you everyone for your advice

@Maria try more it might not be enough to help it

I will thank you so much!

Definitely more water or milk mixed into their food. Warm bath and rub lotion on their belly after in a circular motion. If you have a play centre with a seat in the middle, but your little one in there for 15-20 mins. The position will stimulate a bowel movement! Works like a charm for my little guy.

Dragonfruit helps as well. =)

Thank you all for the advice, I started doing the bio Gaia again and putting more water in her oatmeal and water throughout the day. And of course prunes and pears.

Steamed prunes and apple works like magic for me.
