Switching to edibles

So I want to cut down on how much I smoke for health reasons alone (being that smoking at all isn't good for you). I havent had any problems with my respiratory health but I want to be proactive (I've been smoking almost daily for most years of the last two decades, and Im not planning to stop completely, I was just hoping to not have to smoke daily).

I use cannabis largely for health reasons and it may be why I want to mitigate health side effects. Cannabis helps my pain, anxiety and mood.

Anyway. I'm finding that edibles make me feel strangely. It's much more like the body high I feel on strong hallucinogens and that's NOT what I'm going for...I don't want my body to feel heavy, as I use throughout the day and it makes it hard to do normal tasks. I CAN do them but I really have to push myself and it feels I have weights on my feet and arms.

For night time relief the edibles probably would be fine but morning is the hardest time.

Ive tried using less edible--and there is no effect at all, until the dosage reaches effect and I then get this body feeling that isn't good for daytime use.

I'm looking for insights. My options are smoke in the mornings, smoke concentrates (which I usually do anyway), or will my body adjust to the edibles over time?

Vaping isn't really an option for me as I find I ONLY get a mental effect and it doesn't relieve any pain.

Any thoughts? Or should I just not worry about the smoking itself? My doctor isn't concerned but clearly smoking is never "good".

Thanks.

I used to get that heavy feeling from edibles and I kinda chalked it up to the fact that it's hard to get a precise dosage right even if you make them yourself. And I agree about it not being 'good' but if you insist on a dose morning and night I would say smoke in the morning and then if you need it take a small edible at night. You might have to play around with types of eddies for a while until you find what works best with your body. I can also recommend gummies. Gummies helped me get through some rough patches with my arthritis pre pregnancy.

Also if you like coffee or tea in the mornings you can make a syrup but you're gonna wanna not have anything special or important to do while you figure out how much you need / can handle lol trust me

On the topic of vaping - have you tried a dry herb vape? My understanding is that vapes come in a couple of types and dry herb isn’t always the most common. I use one from Healthy Rips and for me, the effect can be similar to smoking depending on the temperature setting. I feel like I have a lot of control over the experience I want to have. Do I just want to mellow out my anxiety and get some body relaxation a bit without much of the mental effects? Low temp. Do I want full on giggly couch lock? High temp. Every body is different but I find I do get a body high with that.

@Natalie I have only tried dry herb vapes. My dad has one and my partner and neither are very effective for me.

@Alice I like the idea of a syrup. I'm going to ask them next time at the shop which variety would be good to attempt the recipe. It may be a good solution.

Edit: I also meant to say I have tried gummies, sublingual spray and chocolate. I have before attempted oils-- but I found I got toooo high.

I would think a tincture would be next as I haven't yet tried it.

They make flavored syrups too so you wouldn't inherently notice the taste of weed, at least not as strong as eddies, imo. My fave is blueberry in my blueberry tea 😂 I tried Tincture once and it hit me hard so I'm not a fan but you might be different! I wish you good luck in your pain management because phew I felt that x

have you tried sativa based edibles?
smoking flower with papers is the best way to go smoking wise. and thc doesn’t damage your lungs the way tobacco does. tobacco is actually 5x more damaging to smoke than cannabis.
sadly, cannabis hasn’t been thoroughly studied because of racial bias and discrimination. so as of right now, we don’t have a ton of reliable and long term studies to support or dismiss claims about what cannabis use does to your lungs. and a lot of studies are not controlled well and many are tainted by people who smoke cannabis in tobacco products. like blunts/spliffs.
i also don’t recommend bongs or bubblers because bacteria thrives in the water and you breathe it in. and it can cause serious damage. so stick to joints (vibes papers are my fave. i don’t like raw papers at all) and hemp wraps. king palm cones.
edibles are tricky though because it truly depends on how your body metabolizes and processes thc

@aluna Sativa anything is really anxiety inducing for me, but its worth trying for edible to deal with the body feel.

I 💯 agree that cannabis is not as bad for lung health, this is even known by doctors as well. However, any plant material at all that is smoked will have stuff that isn't good for you.

As for joints vs. bongs, I used to smoke joints exclusively, however I found that I developed a cough that I don't have with using a bong. I do change my bong water at least once a day, and clean it thoroughly about twice a week. I also only smoke small amounts at a time so joints aren't ideal these days.

I'm not sure how flower is best for lung health as you say, since it has the excess plant material that concentrates don't have (ex. Some shatter is 85% thc). Do you have any more information about that? If you're right I'll be very glad as I prefer to smoke flower than anything.
