fishy smell when changing nappy

i just noticed today twice when i’ve changed my little boy’s nappy that it smells quite fishy, what can cause this? are we not wiping him properly? do boys get a fishy smell if they have a urine infection like girls?

It’s most commonly a build up of dirt, old skin, moisturisers etc. just make sure you’re really washing in between his creases and really wiping off old cream x

@Amelia we dont use any cream just some wet wipes 🥲

I agree^ it could be a build up I would start by giving him nice bath! And then definitely go from there! If it doesn’t get better I would give his pediatrician a call!

Are you wiping his head, under and around it? I would wipe wipe wipe until you don’t see anything I have to wipe my sons legs sometimes bc it gets everywhere even tho I don’t see it until I wipe

Check his belly button

Is he having stinky poops?? If so a fishy smell cab indicate and allergy or gastro issues. Xx

It could also be a urine infection x

Have you changed nappy brands? Or is this a brand new pack? We had a problem a few months ago, I was convinced there was something going on as there wasnt a very nice smell, I realised after it was the nappies! I just had a very bad smelling pack 😬

How old is your little one? If he's weaning age / older could it be something he's eaten recently? My little boys nappy stinks whenever we give him anything with fish in - its the only food that we can tell what he's eaten 😂

Do you use formula with added DHA or Omega 3s?

Is it like a vinegar/sour smell? That can happen if they’re poorly apparently. My little boy had a cold and his poo smelt very sour x
