New Brunswick or Alberta ?

Hello! My husband and I have been talking for a while about moving. We are currently looking around New Brunswick or Alberta. We are from Ontario and the price of living is killing us. I’m a stay at home mom but my husband is a truck driver so him finding a job isn’t a problem. I just want to know if you live in these 2 places what are some pros and cons ? I’ve been looking around at some houses and the price of houses look pretty reasonable I just don’t know what areas to avoid or what are good ones (we both have never been but are planning a trip to go walk around and get a feel of the place soon). Any advice would be appreciated thank youuuu

I think it all depends if you prefer rural or city life. I live in Cold Lake, AB and there's LOTS of activities for families with young children. We don't have an understaffed hospital, but there are others 1/2 an hour to 3 hours away. There isn't a whole lot for shopping here. There is a Winners and Walmart and such though. We also don't have PST in Alberta, just GST.

I lived in alberta. And I lived in nova Scotia. I would choose the maritime provinces any day if money isn't an issue. More natural beauty, kinder people, better Healthcare from my experience. If making more money is a concern I would go with alberta.

I'm in NB and we have high taxes, shit health care, good luck finding a place to rent (if that's the route you're looking to take). Where I live, we have no shopping aside from essentials (no clothing stores). There's a ton for kids to do
So yes pros and cons but if I wasn't established here, I'd probably move elsewhere haha

I'm in fredericton, NB. I second the shit health care. Unless you have a family doctor, which I really... really hard to get. Gas is higher here than Ontario, currently 1.50. Food is more expensive. If you decide to fly to Ontario to visit family, it's going to cost you lots of money, at least $600 unless you find a crazy deal.

I had the option of both AB or NB. We chose NB because we're closer to both families.

A tiny part of me wishes I chose AB because we both are outdoorsy people and love the mountains so much 💗 we lived in Vancouver island for 3 years and moved to NB when we were pregnant.

Pros: It's a really laid-back lifestyle.

Alberta born and raised, jumping on the shit health care train. I think it's everywhere. It's really hard to find a primary care physician. Some of the urban centers are better, so you could try calgary or edmonton, but I found the quality of care in edmonton pretty bad. Calgary at least is closer to the mountains.

I don't know if i'm just noticing it more but a lot of Albertans are.... a little backwards thinking. So if you're a progressive person, socially speaking, that might be a consideration.

Alberta has more work

I'm not sure about NB, but with so many people moving to AB, it's hard to find jobs here now

Plus food is more expensive, rentals shot super high with interest rates. There are quite a few pros though :)

I'm from NB and I now live in Edmonton AB. I miss the beauty of NB, but honestly the "friendly demeanor" of Maritimers has been mostly a mask in my personal experience. It's a very judgy place once they're involved in your actual life. Healthcare I have found easier to navigate in Edmonton than NB, and if you have kids, I do not recommend NB because the childcare system there is so messed up, there are more children projected to be born in the next year than daycare slots available province wide by a very large margin. And the infighting between French and English in NB is exhausting as well. There is less work in NB, and the pay is significantly less than most other places in the country so employers have way more power than they should. The housing market there is also kind of ridiculous; the influx of people trying to escape from urban centres across the country during COVID led to a crazy housing market boom that drove prices of both buying and renting through the proverbial roof.

I've been in AB for 9 years now, and get regular updates from my family about the state of things back home. I don't really like any of the things I'm hearing.

Edmonton and area is a great place to live! Childcare is not *as bad* as most places. Unfortunately Healthcare is not great anywhere right now. I think cost of living is high everywhere Unfortunately.

We made the move 8 months ago from ON to AB and could not be happier. We live in a lovely place called Okotoks which is 35 mins drive from Calgary. There’s also lots of cute communities near Calgary too.

I haven’t seen 1.50 at the pump in what feels like years in Victoria 😭 we also considered a move to the maritimes for affordability reasons but I don’t want to be away from family :(

I'm not canadian but I live in AB. There's currently a housing crisis in calgary. There is a lot to do but every good house up for sale or rent has a lot of people going for it, increasing the prices. A lot of people having trouble finding a primary care doc. There's A LOT of drug use, if you don't drive you'll see it everywhere in calgary
