Nursery strapping my daughter to a chair during circle time

I saw a photo of my daughter being strapped to a chair during the morning circle time, at pick up I questioned it and they said it’s cause she keeps getting up and walking off during circle time. Apparently she doesn’t get upset by it but I think sounds off. Is that a normal thing or is it weird? My husband is peed off and I’m not happy about it but don’t want to go mad at them if this is quite normal for nurseries to do? Thanks

I’ve never heard of this my 3.5 year wonders sometimes and never have they done anything like this.

I would be going nuts!!! It's not normal at all it's lazy teaching they can't b bothered to keep putting her back in her seat and asking her to sit for circle time so they strap her to a chair!!! That's outrageous. So sorry ur child has gone thru this.

Omg, i would get crazy and very pissed and take some actions

I can’t believe they’ve done that ! I’d go mental at them !
Just when I think I’m ready to put my child in nursery then I read stories like these … this is why I don’t trust anyone but myself and family looking after my little girl 😡
Sorry this happened to your child. You should be able to trust „professionals” ☹️

My child isnt that old yet for circle time but if I found out his nursery did that I would be taking it as high as I possibly can and looking at moving my child that's absolutely disgusting.

Edit to say: just realised this is posted to may 22 group so our children are the same age, I'd be losing my mind they're still babies! Entirely normal for them to explore their surroundings.

My little girl wanders away from activities all the time and they just tell me she wanted her own space. They watch her as she goes to quietly play elsewhere, they aren’t made to all do the same activity at the same time if they dont want to.

Are they tight staffed? Is no one about to watch the rest of the playroom when circle time is happening?

Sorry is this in the UK?

This is wrong on so many levels! I would report them. If a child doesn’t want to sit, don’t make them! God this is nursery not a school!

This is not a good teaching technique. It's not teaching her about sitting when asked to but also like others have said, she's only 20 months old? She's going to want to wonder around. I would not be happy and definitely be challenging it with nursery management

Definitely not okay. My sons not in daycare but he would definitely not be sitting still for circle time. I'd think they'd just keep an eye on him doing his own thing as long as he wasn't disruptive. Tying a child to a chair is absolutely not okay.

I am a former nursery teacher and we would never ever do this to a child who doesn't want to take a part in a circle time. To me this is an abusive behaviour and I would immediately speak to the management but also reported it to Ofsted. This is not normal and even if management does something about it I would be looking for another childcare.

My son’s nursery doesn’t have straps to the chairs, they use small wooden chairs for lunch. But what is circle time? Never heard of it?

I work in a mainstream school nursery, so 3/4 year olds. We expect all children to come to the carpet for circle time (registration, learning time, story time, snack) however those who struggle to sit or keep getting up and down an adult will sit down on the carpet with them to support them. I would be questioning whoever's in charge and I'd be reporting it, no child should be strapped to a chair.

All the other ladies have covered it - but I also don’t agree with this. I would be questioning this with the nursery!

circle time is usually when they sit on the carpet n do reading or maths other things etc..
