Are people moving their babies onto 2nd stage formula when they hit 6 months? I've been told you can but don't have to... so I'm confused what it's purpose is if it's not necessarily a requirement?! I've brought a tin ready anyway. I also assume if its same brand you don't need to change it slowly? Or maybe just mix and match a few feeds for a few days?

No need it's exactly the same as stage 1, all a gimmick. Continue with stage 1 as per normal. Just marketing rubbish x

Nope, we'll be sticking with stage 1 milk. Zero need to move them over. The only reason companies started selling stage 2 formula is because they're not allowed to advertise stage 1 formula in the UK as WHO wants breastfeeding to be promoted first and foremost so there's strict regulations around advertising stage 1.
It's basically exactly the same formula as stage 1.

Perfect, thanks both! 😊

The only difference is a couple of vitamins/mineral amounts, which is so small its barely noticeable. As soon as you start weaning (be it purees or baby led) they will get the different nutrient levels from the weaning foods rather than from any form of milk. Just choose sensibly and don't raise them on a diet of plain pasta and Mcdonalds chicken nuggets 😄 feed them a rainbow as my family always says and you'll be fine.

No need to change. It only exists because they can’t advertise and price differently infant milk - so introduce 2/3 stages as a marketing gimmick.
