Daycare bugs

So unfortunately, we had to make the decision to put our 8 month old into daycare. She’s been going for 4 weeks now. She’s in care 2 days a week Thursday and Friday. First week she woke up Sunday morning, with a nasty cold. Thankfully it had cleared up by Thursday. Week 2 she woke up Saturday with a tummy bug and our first visit to the ED. Sunday she woke with another cold. That week followed 2 additional visits to the Emergency Room and a 3 day hospital admission. With a diagnosis of 2 viral infections rhinovirus and enterovirus. Thankfully after a week off daycare, our daughter returned to her normal happy self. She was back to daycare Thursday and Friday and has one again woken this morning with a terrible cold!

I heard about daycare germs, but this seems extreme. Is this normal, to get sick every time she goes? Or should I be looking for another daycare?

Anyone have any tips on keeping the plague away?

Very normal when your baby catch different viruses every week. Every children carry so many viruses in daycare!!

My children didn't catch different viruses every week but the first year was hard when they play with other children with full of germs 🥺🥴

But it will get better once your baby immune system get stronger. I've been told that its either now or wait till your child in school and get sick every week.

sadly it’s pretty common, especially with babies that haven’t been around many germs or other children. i used to work at a daycare and was sick literally every other week.. and that’s with my big grown up immune system 😅 daycare germs are no joke at all. we do our best to clean and disinfect multiple times a day (at least every daycare should be) but until parents stop sending their babies in knowing they’re sick, it’s gonna keep happening. hugs for you and your sweet girl. i hope y’all get over this quick 🫶🏼

Just wondering is hospital stay for babies and young children free in Australia? So worried as we will be going to day care in a few months too.

yes our hospital stay was covered by Medicare.

Oh this is so hard! I have worked in childcare for over 13 years and the germs are no joke! It’s very hard to stop the spread especially for babies as they put everything in their mouths!

My baby will start soon before I head back to work and I’m not looking forward to the sickness we will be catch!

Hang in there! It will get better once immune system is stronger! Make sure you keep allowing your child to be around other children (obv not while she’s super sick) but in general so that her body continues to be exposed to different germs and learns to fight back!

Things you can do even with babies to help them not get overly sick:

- if you breastfeed do this more often
- give baby probiotics and or multi vitamin
- natural Vit c (serve orange slices)
- hand washing!!!! This is very big and important! If you don’t want to hand was by the sink you can get Mortan anti bacterial wipes!
- when baby is sick try to disinfect and clean areas in her play space, home etx
- get outsid
