Stressed about mum when I give birth

Sorry - long post!
So I’m trying to prepare for my birth and get into a calm state of mind etc. I’m feeling pretty confident; giving birth is something I’ve always looked forward to so I’m not scared about this.

The thing that has been starting to stress me out has been the thought of my mum and sister when it comes to me being in labour etc and them coming to meet the baby. When my sister had her two (both c sections) we were all in the hospital waiting room, excited and waiting with baited breath. That’s what she wanted. She called us (or someone did - I don’t remember) to tell us to come now as she was in labour - this was the first one that ended with unplanned c section.

Because she had this experience I know my family will expect to do the same for me, but I’m feeling agitated at the thought of everyone waiting for me to pop the baby out. At my sister’s, my mum (who is a massive worrier) was panicking because we ended up waiting ages and she started freaking out thinking something was wrong. Turned out that everything was fine - my sister and her husband were just enjoying being with their new baby instead of worrying about us lot. Fair enough.

I told my mum this evening that I would be turning the location app on my phone off for the month so she doesn’t know where I am, as she’ll just get into a flap if she sees I’m at the hospital. I’ve been told we can’t have visitors at the hospital anyway, which is a relief to me, but even the thought of them pestering in any way stresses me out. I can get easily overwhelmed, especially by my family, so I’m trying to deal with this before it comes to it. Anyway, my mum freaked out because I told her I’d be turning off the location on my phone and said she would just worry if I didn’t answer the phone. I told her that if I don’t answer I’m obviously busy and I’ll call when I can. She argued the toss saying it didn’t matter if she could see where I was etc. She would be happier knowing where I was. I am so used to her over worrying and it drives me mad. My sister also has a knack of making me feel bad and is very overpowering and will no doubt have an issue with me saying I’ll call after baby is born. I want everyone to be happy but most of all I want to feel calm and not have to worry about my family while I’m trying to concentrate on getting the baby out.

Any advice???

I can relate so what… what I’ve done is pretty early on try to manage expectations with my family. Starting with informing them only my husband would be I the delivery room with me. Then telling them I didn’t want anyone around before I delivered (they live far away so they were planning to come and chill with us before the baby came). For me that felt very stressful and as though it was going to take away from the last few days my husband and I had as “just us”. Plus I want to be in my calm bubble before hand not having worriers and opinions coming at me. It was really hard talking to them about these things some got upset initially, but they all seem ok now. It is really hard with family sometimes especially not wanting to upset them, but right now it’s about you and your partner and your baby… not anyone else. Hope it goes well for you🙃

Lay down the law, girl. This is your baby, your birthing experience. Doesn't matter how someone else did theirs. Tell them you will call them after baby has arrived, and that's that. You don't need to justify yourself.

Could you just leave your phone at home on charge and let your husband update everyone in the moment. Hospital doesn't allow visitors and he can gatekeep them and give you that calm space. Plus your phone will show you being at home for them so hopefully less pestering anyway 😅

You won't be worrying about your family in the moment you're actually giving birth, because you'll have way more important things to focus on (and nature basically switches your brain over to in the moment mode), and afterwards you'll be so wrapped up in your new baby, you again will completely forget your family exists for a beat or two (just like your sister did when she left you hanging).

I have a similar situation in that my mother in law is lovely but is a very anxious person and worries about EVERYTHING, and she displaces her worries onto others. My fiance is a type 1 diabetic and he had us both on his app incase of emergencies and she continually would monitor and call me (and stalk his location) whenever his sugar levels went low. It drove us nuts so we removed her from the apps -it didn’t go well but we stuck to it. With regards to labour, we are thinking of not telling anyone when I am in labour, because I just know she will be calling and texting constantly for updates and it will stress us out. It will also mean no unexpected visitors at the hospital or at home before we want them. The last thing I need is my mother in law displacing her anxiety about the labour onto us! I already know she is going to be very anxious with the baby anyway which is going to drive me nuts! So if I can avoid it during labour then I will.

This is it exactly. My mum asked what difference it makes if she knows where I am, but I know she’ll send messages wanting updates and will also be on the phone to everyone telling them I’m at the hospital so they’ll probably all be preparing themselves to come down to visit before I would like them to. I’m a one-thing-at-a-time kind of person so want to be able to focus on the baby and then worry about them afterwards once I’ve had time to process it all.

To be honest, why does she need your location-ever? I have found that the more my mother in law knows, the more anxious she becomes. It wasn’t helpful for either party, especially if they lack insight into how stressful their behaviour can be. When we removed her from the diabetic/find me app we didn’t tell her, and within a day she called us to say why she couldn’t see him. She had been checking EVERYDAY! Which isn’t healthy! I would also worry if your mum does the same with baby. We now do the ethos of a “need to know” basis. We are adults, we do not need continuous monitoring or need to explain ourselves! I am even thinking of us not telling anyone the baby has arrived until we are home and settled and ready for visitors. Like you, we will also be compared to my sister in law who has two children but I couldn’t care less. This is our journey, not a “follow how the sister in law did it” journey.

When I was at uni the calling became A LOT and then we discovered the location app and it helped in the sense that she could see I was at home so didn’t feel the need to call all the time because she knew I was safe. It meant she pestered me less so worked for me. If I confront her about her over worrying she brings up previous loss, which I can’t really fight. Most of the time it’s fine but with this upcoming birth I’m already anticipating the hyperactivity from everyone when all I want to do is stay calm.

SPPH (secondary postpartum haemorrhage) due to retained placenta -D&C?

Looking to see if anyone else has experienced this? Currently trying to pass retained tissue ( 4 weeks pp) and finding every day so exhausting just constantly waiting and checking my bleeding. I stopped bleeding on week 2.5/3 then bleeding picked up last Saturday and I haemorrhaged on Thursday morning with a rush to hospital. Everyday since I’m waking up scared I’ll be bleeding out. Worried to go toilet to check, I’m not convinced I’ll be passing it naturally and I’m worried I’ll need a D&C… has anyone had this? My retained tissue is 2cm so they said it’s small but I have no signs of passing it or blood changing colour to show slowing down.

39 weeks pregnant FTM

39 weeks baby hasn’t come yet and I am just full of anxiety. I am trying to relax. I am trying to chill, but I can’t chill. I do not want to be induced. I would love to have her natural. Issue is I am tight down there and petite and baby is measuring big like the head especially. I know that measurements can be off. But I have photos! And she is a chunk. This is so unpredictable. How do I just put my faith forward and trust in God and how do I let go of this anxiety? I am doing fine and then boom it hits me and I want to ball my eyes out. I am trying to treat myself and do little things but driving or doing anything is so hard now and I’m so huge and uncomfortable …I’m at my breaking point 😭

So ready for second trimester 🥲

I really really hate the first trimester. It’s exhausting, no appetite, not enough hours to get the amount of sleep I need, headaches, smell sensitivity, and overall just feeling like crap! And I don’t want to announce anything until 14 weeks since I’ve had losses before, and it’s getting really hard to hide it from my friends. Two more weeks to go….

Just needed to vent to others who understand!
