Can double-barrelled names REALLY get passed down generations?

Silly question but...

If you have a child and decide to give them a double-barrelled name from you and your partner, then what happens in the future when the child is grown up and wants a family and also goes down the route of combining theirs and their parents surnames...

In which case it becomes a triple-baralled name (or quadruple-barrelled name if the partner also has a double barrelled name).

At what point do we stop adding names for every generation?

And if we remove a name and only take one of the two barrelled names on for the next double barrelling... then doesn't it defeat the initial purpose of the double barrell because the child will ultimately be left to choose between whether to continue on with just the mother's or father's last name?

Random thought 🤣

Honestly good question, we double barrelled my daughters name because we aren’t married and I always said when I get married I don’t want to lose my last name anyway. Some family members obviously didn’t like it, but I was firm on keeping my name 🙈 I must admit, we didn’t think about what would happen if she decides to marry in the future and would also like to keep her last name. I’m fairly certain I read that you can legally change your last name to anything though, even if not related to your family, so maybe some of the kids will do that haha
