So I’ve been doing pretty good managing my pumping schedule. I’ve gotten myself down to only 3 times a day exclusively pumping and haven’t had any problems with losing milk. Today I woke up to one of my breasts super sore with a clogged duct. Any other time I’ve had one I’d just put a hot towel on it and pump and it’ll go away. I’ve tried this twice now and it’s not helping. What do I do?

I see your baby is only a couple of months old? Only pumping 3 times a day does not seem enough, really you need to be pumping as often as baby feeds or you will keep getting these issues. Have you tried having a hot shower and massaging the sore breast? I don’t know if baby ever latches but if they do it can be worth putting them on, they can extract so much better than a pump so can sometimes help get things flowing. But if it feels hot to the touch or you feel at all unwell, it could be mastitis, which really needs a doctors visit and antibiotics.

Yea I just did the hot shower and I did try putting her on but she doesn’t usually take it when it’s too swollen unfortunately. I’ll try pumping more often

I also encourage you to nurse baby as much as you can if you’re doing it (it’s the best/fastest method to unclog before it gets worse) make sure that you’re positioning baby for the best latch- sometimes I’d nurse laying down and that was terrible for me I’d always get clogged duct - start pumping every two hours maybe and hot showers and massage like Lisa says do wonders too.
Another tip would be to be sure you’re using a correct size of nipple shields or whatever that part is called in the pump where you put your nipples. For me that was a game changer in my pumping journey!
Hope this helps and if you feel too sick please visit the doctor so you don’t get mastitis 🙏🏼

I would suggest taking sunflower lecithin every day. Prevents clogs

Thanks Luisa, I’ll try that.

wow, I was actually gifted some of that but never used it

I highly recommend it. I took one a day, when I was pumping with my first child. The only time I got clogs was when I stopped taking the pills.

okay, just took my first one. Hopefully it’ll give me some relief soon

When i spoke with my dr because i eas frequently having this i was advised medical professionals are now saying it is inflamed duct not an actual clog in duct. protocol to treat inflammation is ice and taking Tylenol.

I just got off the phone with a lactation specialist and she actually said to stop doing the warm compresses and start doing cold. Funny how things change

Yea it happens so fast it's hard to follow it all, Good luck mama hope you feel better soon. Oh also when I was breastfeeding I found if I was wearing a bra that was a little bit too snug it happened more often. I had to stop using my breastfeeding bra because it kept happening as soon as I switched to a looser sports bra or just went without at home I found it got better.
