Applying for new job while receiving SMP

We’re looking to secure a place at nursery’s when my baby is 12 months old in September. I wasn’t enjoying my job when I went on Mat leave and really don’t want to go back but need to figure out what I’m doing for the nursery days.

Can you apply for a new job and simply hand in your notice during Mat leave? All the information is a bit muddy around it online. I’m only receiving the standard SMP nothing extra, do I have to pay it back? Do I owe my current employer anything? Just wondered if anyone had done this.

Yep done it twice 🙄😂
You can hand your notice in while on mat leave but you have to give 8 weeks notice that you’re not returning
If you only receive SMP you don’t owe them anything or need to pay anything back, they’ll actually owe you holiday days

Good for you!
That’s really good to know thank you, and about the 8 week notice period x

how does it work if they paid you? I had full pay for couple months then stat pay but don’t wanna go back to working 48 hours a week :/

if the employer pays you more than what statutory is (6 weeks 90%, 33 weeks £170ish) then you would have to pay them back the extra they’ve topped up with
I think the only way out of it is returning to work for I think it’s 3 months and then leaving x

they wouldn’t expect it all back in one go though surely? Just can’t bring myself to leave her for that long every week I’d miss out on so much and I don’t have the childcare so all my wage would go on nurseries :/ x

I think it completely depends on your employer and what’s in your contract! If you’ve got a good employer I imagine they’d work with you to pay it back
It’s awful isn’t it, I only did 27 hours at mine and I couldn’t even bring myself to do that 😅 x

it’s Amazon so I have no clue how compassionate they’d be 😅 it’s just breaking my heart thinking about leaving her, and leaving her with anyone else… I’m looking into childminding and can hopefully start that and leave my current job x
