Progesterone

Hi, just wondering if anyone has any successful stories using progesterone and at which point was it started? I’ve had two chemicals and a miscarriage in the space of 8 months and I am going to ask my GP to refer me to the recurrent miscarriage clinic and also request progesterone for future pregnancies. I find the advice/recommendation quite conflicting though as NICE guidance states that it shouldn’t be given before a pregnancy and only given when bleeding/spotting has been confirmed in a viable pregnancy (with a history of at least 1 miscarriage) But then I’ve heard lots of other people saying they started taking from day 21 of cycle (before a positive test) right up until 16 weeks.

I got prescribed it after 3 chemical pregnancies to start taking 3 days after ovulation. Its worked for me, second month of being on it I got and stayed pregnant. Took it up to 14 weeks pregnant. Best of luck.

I had a successful use with it. I had a miscarriage in 2021 and then got pregnant the cycle after. But my progesterone levels decreased at like 8 weeks so i was prescribed suppository progesterone for 12 weeks and had no problems with that pregnancy. I had another miscarriage in 2023 and got pregnant again the cycle after. I had asked my OB if i needed it again to prevent it from happening again but i am currently 23 weeks without needing it.

Sorry to hear this, I wish you all the luck with your next pregnancy.

I requested progesterone as I got pregnant before my referral (it was a long wait) and it was on the website as a recommendation. I got told I couldn't take it until a scan showed the baby is in the right place, this is because if baby is in the tube it can course serious damage. I had my scan at 6 1/2 weeks, turned out I was only just over 5 but they could see enough to give it me. I'm currently 14 weeks and lost early with my last two so fingers crossed I'm a success story. I've been told I need to take it until week 16.
The only downside is it's made me so ill and dizzy I've been signed off work the whole time I've been on it and wouldn't have managed without strong family support. Definitely worth it but not easy.

I started taking it after becoming pregnant ( I can’t remember exactly when, but pretty much as soon as I got a positive test and got blood work to confirm low progesterone).
I didn’t really have any side effects (or if I did, maybe just figured it was from being pregnant). But it worked and I had my baby!!

I'm 31 weeks after 4 miscarriages (3 chemical) I was on progesterone from week 4 to week 16. Can't say for sure it's what made the difference but I'm so glad I fought for it x

thank you for sharing your story and I am so pleased hearing that you were given it and found it has helped. I am convinced that is what is missing for me as I have had hormone deficiency in the past, except it was oestrogen that time (not when TTC). Can I ask who it was that prescribed it to you? Was it the GP or someone else? Also, did they prescribe it due to your history of miscarriages or did you have spotting early on? Sorry for the questions x

I had an appointment at my local miscarriage clinic after my 4th loss and it was stated there that I was to call as soon as I had a positive pregnancy test and they would prescribe progesterone.
I then tested positive 3 days later and the clinic tried to back track saying they meant after I'd had a scan at 6 weeks which just isn't what we had agreed in the appointment but my notes hadn't yet been uploaded so I really had to push back and advocate for myself and then they agreed.
My GP point blank refused to renew the prescriptions as it's on their 'red list' whatever that means so my local hospital had to prescribe it every month and I had to go an collect it from the hospital Pharmacy x

I was also adamant that I had low progesterone, as my luteal phase was very short hence why I'm inclined to think the prescription really did help x

thank you for your response. It sounds as though you really fought which evidently was the right thing to do! I will absolutely be doing the same. But from what you have shared and others it sounds as though they won’t be forthcoming in prescribing it to me if and when I do test positive but I will push and push if I have to. Wishing you all the best for the rest of your pregnancy and congratulations 🤍

I’m confused too as I just had an appointment with the recurrent miscarriage clinic and they absolutely refused to prescribe progesterone for a subsequent pregnancy unless I’m bleeding. I don’t know if trusts follow the guidelines differently or if the guidelines have recently changed??

oh really?! That’s what I thought too but then so many people have got them, more as a preventative. I know they have to scan first to ensure that they can check it’s a viable pregnancy on a scan before giving it but all my MC have been before 6 weeks so if that was the case I don’t think they would give it to me. I bled in this pregnancy now (ended in MC Monday) but they never offered me progesterone. Can I ask how you found the recurrent miscarriage clinic? I have a GP appointment today to ask for a referral

My gp suggested it (I was going to go private to try and get it anyway) at 4 weeks pregnant (coz bloods showed low progesterone) . I'd already had 2 m/C's before. Bubs is now 19 months and I feel the progesterone is what helped.

thank you for sharing 🥰 do you mind me asking when your found out your progesterone was low? Was it when you found out you were pregnant or was it prior at cycle day 21? I’m convinced it’s that I need

I asked the doc for blood tests at 4 weeks pregnant to check for viability and started the pessaries about 6-7 weeks pregnant.

I've been taking it but never got tested to see if I was low or not. Just got told it might help.
