I got married last year June, but haven’t changed my Last name to my partner’s yet. Firstly, the hassle to change names on all of my documents, secondly I don’t feel the need to for some reason or may be just don’t wanna change my identity as in the full name that I have been known all my life.
So My question is- Is someone obliged by law to take partners surname in the UK after marriage?

No, not at all

No! I’m in a similar position - I don’t want to change my name and our daughter is double barrelled so has nothing our names 😊

I got married in my home country and took my husband’s name. That was 3 years ago and I still haven’t changed my name in any UK official thing like utility bills or bank 😂

No legal obligation no. I only legally changed mine after my daughter was born. Which was after nearly 4 years married, because I wanted the same last name as my LG.

Nope you don’t have to at all!
HOWEVER
I got married in September and thought it’d be a hassle changing my name on everything but it was the easiest thing ever! I just took a picture of the marriage certificate and emailed it everyone requesting my name be changed (literally just copied and passed the email to all the company’s needed then took it to the bank and doctors before sending it of to dvla. The only form I had to fill out was to get a new license (which is free) and a little bit on my log book to change the name on that

what did you do about your passport?

I haven’t done that, you don’t legally need to change that until it runs out of date you just have to make sure you book any holidays in the name on your passport

Nope. Your choice. My husband knew how important mine was to me so we decided to double barrel our daughter's surname and then when we got married in August we both double barrelled to match. Totally your choice there are no rules

No you don’t have to change it. It’s a personal choice

I got married in 2022. Changing my name was an absolute ballache! It was worth it in the end to me, but I completely understand why people don't bother anymore.

Of course you're not obliged. It's probably a conversation you should have had before you got married. My husband knew I would be double barrelling as I didn't want to give up my surname. I didn't hyphenate, so I can use his name when it relates to us as a family (my son has his name)

I've been married since 2018 and haven't changed my name, nor do I feel the need to. I love my husband,, but being married does not define me.
My daughter has a different surname to mine (my husband's) and that's absolutely fine. Just make sure to have a copy of the birth certificate if you travel abroad, that's all x

oh amazing! I’ve been putting it off due to cost lol but looks like I can start the process then and not change my passport until it expires. Thank you ☺️

i read that if you do go away with children it’s also a good idea to take a copy of marriage and/or any children’s birth certificates aswell. Some country’s are funny about you travelling with children that may not appear to be you’re due to surname and may pull you aside if they have any questions so it’s best to have the proof with you than have to sit in a little room waiting for them to receive the proof from someone else.
My sister got pulled to the side in Portugal in December but she had the birth certificate with her so they let her go instead of having to wait for them to source the proof.

I like the idea of a family having one name. But it is a ball ache. With passport you need to pay for the cost of a renewal inorder to change your name on it so I haven't done that yet. I have done banks and majority of my utilities though. Its so messy!

I literally have the same situation as and I’ve been putting it off until my driving license expires to change it which is end of this year but I was concerned with passport too. so definitely don’t need to change passport until it expires, you just need to book holidays under name that matches passport? So glad I read the comments, good to know about the marriage and birth certificates. I have travelled on flights with little one but only within UK so took birth certificate and this is perfectly fine.

yes it’s definitely fine, they don’t check any other form of identity as long as boarding passes are same as passport names. We’ve got a holiday booked in September and I did SO much research because I was worried about it and didn’t want to pay for new passport as mine still has 8 years left on it.
They just say take your marriage certificate incase for some reason they do look at other forms of identity then that shows you was the name on the passport when the passport was made and the child’s birth certificate so you have proof your child’s yours incase of any confusing with different surnames names on the passports
