Baby will not sleep in cot

Only a week old but my baby won’t settle in their bedside cot. Only will sleep on me spend 11.30-6.30am with her feeding, then she lays on me falls asleep, I put her in the cot but last 5-10mins max back to doing sleeping on me or some feeding. So I just stay awake this whole time but it becomes a struggle. When will I be able to sleep in bed next to them is this normal and if so does it get better and will I soon be able to sleep without her on me and when she does:

Have you tried a Moses basket? Mine finds the cot too big

same with us as Jenni, I think our boy likes to be snug and his next2me feels too big, luckily our pram (iCandy) is approved for overnight sleeping so he now sleeps in his pram carrycot put on top of the next2me 🤣 we also found that wrapping him in his blanket beforehand helped, as he doesn't get a shock of a cold surface. And finally, waiting a good 10 minutes after he appears asleep, so in deep sleep state before we put him down also helped.

We are using a tommee tippee sleep bag to swaddle our boy. Makes him feel secure, if we cuddle and rock until asleep in it then put him in crib he goes down ok. I think it's normal for them not to love being alone but there are tricks to help. Dummy, white noise, swaddle, not disturbing them when in 'light sleep'

Try skin to skin contact

@Jenni she seems to settle in the day in that but not the night

@Jo I’ve tried these 😫 she hates the swaddle bag I’ve got a dummy but wanted to wait until week 2 when breast feeding more established midwife said. White noise doesn’t seem to do much for her either I just keep trying with everything

@Ellie I do that before bed when she lays on me but as soon as goes down by herself she just starts getting unsettled again

Don’t worry our little boy was the same at 1 week old, he is now one month and after some more time on his back in the day when settled and I use ‘the love to dream’ swaddle he is now sleeping 4 hour a time in his next to me at nighttime xx

My 6 day old is exactly the same, unfortunately I have no advice as I literally cannot put him in his Moses basket for 1 minute without him crying! Going to try some more during the day to see if it helps at all. Currently doing shifts with husband so one of us is awake all night as it’s the only way we get some sleep x

@L H that’s what I’m having to do as well so tired 🤣 fingers crossed it’s just a few weeks and they settle soon x

Yeah I've found mine hates the Snuzpod, it's too big. But moses basket or bassinet is a winner!

Might be a bit naughty but we’re using one of the cosy dream positioner things. She loves it. I do let her sleep in it, not sure if we are supposed to but she’s only 3 weeks today and too small to roll out of it xx

I also swaddles for two nights at the start and it got her cosy and used to the bedside cot I think x

@Annem my wee one is the same 3 weeks old on thurs loves the Moses basket wasn’t settling for next to me at all. Someone suggested to place a hot water bottle on the sheet before he goes in so it heats the sheet up a wee bit before placing him in. I think my wee one also likes to be snug! He is almost outgrown the Moses basket 🥹

My daughter is 5 weeks now. She is only small too. I found that a Moses basket worked a lot better at first. Then I gradually introduced to her cot. My advice is buy a Ewan the sheep- attach him to the side of the cot. She is now sleeping from 12 ish to 5 am. She loves Ewan- so do we as we find it helps us relax and sleep too, Good luck

@Jenny +1 to Ewan. Mine loves falling asleep to his white noise!

I had the same issue, you can put what they call a day bed in her cot. It helps :) https://amzn.eu/d/j9Wcdod

We have been putting a hot water bottle in the crib before he goes into warm the mattress and he seems to like this. I've also put one of my worn t-shirts over his mattress so his crib smells of me, doing both of these things has meant he is now sleeping in his crib at night.
