Dropping milk at 10 months

Very confused on what to do. Baby is on 210ml 3x a day and am wanting to take her mid day bottle out as advised by HV, do I lesson the milk over time or do I not offer the formula at all and provide a lunch instead?

I think you could do either depending on what works for you and baby

My baby is nearly 10 months and has 3x 7-8oz bottles 7am, 2pm and 6.30pm. Why has the health visitor said it’s too much?? Worried I’m over feeding him now x

Avatar

she didnt say it was too much sorry if you thought that’s what I mean didnt mean to worry you she didn’t really go that deeply into it just that I should drop her midday milk and replace it for lunch because she needs to be weaned off formula by 1🙂x

Avatar

Ohhhh okay I see :) makes sense! Xx

Avatar

I haven't heard of this before I think 3 bottles at this age is normal if it's what your baby wants, I know they normally drop the afternoon bottle before 12 months but you will know when your baby is ready to do that, even when you stop formula at 12 months it will be replaced with cows milk anyway so baby needing to come off formula makes no sense, do everything by your baby's cues and what baby wants and needs

Avatar

My girl is still on 3 x 8oz a day and 3 meals and showing no signs of wanting to drop a feed yet I wouldn't worry about it lovely you will know when it's time xx

Avatar

There's not set number of bottles it's the total amount that's recommended
400/600mls a day is the recommended amount at 10 months
My girl won't take more than 4ozs except her bedtime one which is 6ozs so she has more "bottles" a day but still has around 400ml a day
3ozs 7am
3ozs 11am
3ozs 2pm
6ozs 5pm
6ozs dream feed 10pm
She also has breakfast, lunch and evening meal!

How you give it is up to you, but until 12m formula is their main source of iron, so if they're having less formula you need to add a multivitamin x

Avatar

That’s why I’m so confused! thats exactly what I thought! I was confident she was supposed to be on she 3 bottles a day with breakfast and dinner until 12 months and now the HV is trying to get me to cancel one out when she was the one that told me it was 3 bottles until 12 months😩x

Avatar

I gave her lunch for the first time yesterday and it threw off her dinner and bedtime bottle she didn’t eat her dinner and had only half a bottle😕x

Avatar

my HV said 2 bottles at 8ozs is recommended at this age for my baby.
She also said multivitamins aren't needed until they go on to cows milk at 12m.

Avatar

On my cow&gate formula it says 3 7oz bottles a day up to 12 months so I don't know why the HV is recommending dropping one?

Avatar

@Kacey if they're having over 500ml of formula a day they don't need anything extra, if they are having less they do....which is what I said
2x 8ozs isn't the recommended amount

Avatar

Babies don't HAVE to be weaned of formula by 12 months.
My 2 cents of advice, ignore your HV.
I do breakfast lunch and dinner and my little girl has 4 bottles most days. 3x 6oz and 1x 8oz.
Also, if you decide to stop formula feeding at 12M they could still have 3 cups of milk a day.
Keep doing what you're doing. When your baby is ready to drop a bottle, you'll know

Avatar

@Daphne my older 3 were still having formula until around 18 months, I agree they don't have to be off it by 12 months but that's the earliest they should be introduced to drinking cows milk
I always say follow babies lead not the HV 😉

Avatar

Honestly just follow what your baby wants, some babies are hungry and some babies not so much you can follow guidelines but just remember that's all they are, my baby is starting to take less from her bottles like maybe an oz or two but she's nowhere near ready to drop a whole bottle yet so I will reduce her bottles to 7oz over the next week, and as daphne said aswell you don't have to wean off formula at 12 months again this is just a guideline as to when baby CAN drink cows milk, don't worry about it and follow your baby's lead, they will let you know trust me

Avatar

unfortunately it's not a one size fits all thing.
Guidelines is the key word there.
I'm really not being rude, but you're coming across like you're biting my head off over it.
How do you know it's not what my baby needs/wants?
I'm going to follow my HV's advice rather than someone on the internet I don't know

Avatar

@Kacey because following the HV isn't following your baby
If you'd said I'm going baby my babies preference that's one thing but HV aren't always right. And I'm not just giving the wrong advice, I've shared NHS advice which is based on science
As they're only have 2 x 8oz bottles they will need extra iron added
But yeah you follow your HV advice which is wrong which as a FTM you'll soon begin to learn this.

Avatar

Are you offering food/milk every 2hrs? I find it works best so she still eats and drinks all her milk so our day looks like this

7.30am bottle 8oz
9.30am breakfast
10am nap
10.30am wake up
10.30am small snack (fruit)
11.45am lunch
1.30pm bottle 8oz
2pm Nap
4pm wake up
4pm small snack (wafer or biscuit)
5pm dinner
7pm bottle 8oz
7.30pm bedtime

how do you know my baby wasn't ready to drop a feed?
How do you know I'm not going by their lead?
In fact, how do you know I'm a first time mum?
They're all presumptions that you've made. And they're all wrong.

Regardless, you're a stranger on the internet, who doesn't know me or my family.
I am not going to take advice from you, nor am I going to allow you to make what you think are first time mums feel like rubbish because they're doing something 'wrong'

If you've had 30000 children it does NOT make you a better mum than a first time mum, people need to remember this.

Avatar

@Kacey because you've said twice now "the advice of my HV"
I'm not telling you what tondo I'm telling you the correct guidelines in that if your baby is having less than 400mls of formula (which they are) they need iron added to their formula
Imagine being so triggered by being given the correct advice 🙄

Avatar

they are not having less than 400ml a day.
8ozs is 236
236 x 2 is 472
They are having 472ml a day.

I am following the advice of my HV. My baby was ready to drop feeds, but again, I don't need to explain that to you.

Oh believe me, I'm not triggered.
Just telling you you're wrong about MY baby, who I spend day in day out with.

Fancy being so entitled you think you know what's best for my baby better than me 😂

Avatar

@Kacey calm down Kacey :). There's no need to be rude. Heather initially just shared NHS guidelines and advice and you got triggered and went for her. There is no need.
You're really being a bully and coming at another mum for no other reason than you not being able to cope with another opinion. Which is rather entitled.
Have a lovely Sunday!

Avatar

I am calm.

She did share the guidelines but also made some presumptions that were wrong.
If I'm expected to be told I'm 'wrong' so should everyone else.
I'm not a bully but I WILL stand up for myself and advocate for my baby and what they need. I'm not going to be told I'm doing it wrong by someone random on the internet.

I also, don't need to explain myself to you either.

Avatar

@Kacey yes good for you! You sound like a fantastic mum! Have a lovely Sunday :)

Avatar

How did this escalate so quickly 🤷‍♀️😂

Avatar

I’m lucky if I can get 350ml into my nearly 10 month old in a 24hr period! But He’s happy, healthy and growing well. I also won’t be having anymore HV apps because I know my baby wayyyyy more than someone who comes into my home for 5 mins. You do what’s best for you, if it works why change it ☺️
