Hi all.. after some advice and honest opinions!
My husband and 5 month little girl live as a multigenerational home with my mum and my younger brother and his girlfriend. We’re hoping to move as we’ve outgrown our family home and we plan on having more children! My brother and his girlfriend also like the idea of continuing to live all together for the foreseeable.
As a family we adore Cornwall and have always had the pipe dream of living in Newquay and are now strongly considering making the move (we currently live in Wigan so way up north)
Obviously it’s a brilliant holiday destination but we’re well aware the weather isn’t like that all year round. Living in Wigan we are VERY accustomed to grim weather so that doesn’t bother us, we feel we’d rather have grim weather in Cornwall than grim weather here 🤣
But for real how do you actually rate living in Newquay especially with a young family?
We’re very outdoorsy in all weather.
Also, do you think we would be welcomed as newcomers to the area?

not to sound rude or unwelcoming but we’re currently going through a terrible housing crisis. two bedroom flats alone are averaging 1,300pcm to rent. locals are being pushed out of their homes leaving them no where to live, including myself and my small three person family my baby is only 6 months old. there are currently 18 homes to rent in newquay compared to 894 air b&bs online to book. we’re being turned away from everywhere as i’m on maternity leave and all people care about is money, leaving us homeless in 2 months if we don’t find anywhere.

I’m so sorry to hear you’re in that situation.. believe me the idea of second homes for profit is something I’m completely against as I know the effects it has. We would be upping sticks and moving completely as a full time residence, not a holiday home x

that’s not the only point i’m trying to make without seeming mean or rude, it’s quite difficult. there are hundreds of local families desperately looking for homes where their families are, their childhood, their jobs, their friends just where their entire life is and they get taken by people that just like the idea of being here as they’ve been on holiday a few times. living in newquay and holidaying in newquay are complete opposites.

also not to sound rude but that’s kind of why I was asking.. I’m aware holidaying and living are different as I said in my post, so I wanted genuine opinions of people who live there as to what it’s really like. If anybody is able to answer that aside from the housing crisis..

@Rachel it's a bloody magical place to live. There's a million things to do with a young family all year round (if you don't mind a bit of rain). Newquay is a mixture of people who grew up here or moved here for a better life (we have northeners, Ozzies, south africans - you name it!), so you will be welcomed with open arms. Summer tourism is a bit mental, but you sort of put up with it because the rest of the time, it is amazing. So yeah, housing is absolutely f'ed, but it's not the odd family who wants to have a better life and contribute to a community that is the issue. It's the second home owners and airbnb-ers that are destroying Cornwall. Xx
