Glucose Test 😳

I wasn’t ready!! No one warned me!! I had to take my glucose test this morning as I’m 24 weeks now. The glucola itself really didn’t taste too bad, so I was like, I got this! And then a half hour later in the waiting room…. I got overheated, felt like I couldn’t breathe right, felt like I was going to have a panic attack, couldn’t quite see straight, felt faint and lightheaded.

I got back to the exam room at the one hour point, and as she was drawing the blood (which I have *never* had any issues with) I immediately felt like my BP bottomed out and I was absolutely going to pass out.

My nurse had me lay down, my husband blew air on me with his coffee breath (haha), the nurse got me some cold water and crackers because she knew the fasting didn’t help. She took my BP and it was 90/58. Whoa!!

I talked to my doc about the frequency I’ve felt light headed, and *of course* the glucola set it into overdrive. She explained veins being dilated and how our brain sees it as we gon’ drop. Etc etc. but thennn I saw my results (some of them anyway) from the blood test and it looks like I’m anemic. I wonder why she didn’t bring that up as a possible reason to feel so tired and faint so often? Hmm.

Doc said the clinic would only call me if something was wrong— if they found anything concerning in the blood panel or if I need to take the three hour GD test. I’ll know by tomorrow! šŸ¤žšŸ»šŸ¤žšŸ»šŸ¤žšŸ»

definitely ask, but you also have like four weeks to take it as well, I believe! Yeah— NO ONE told me how it really went for them! So I thought I’d give a heads up. While it feels rough, it’s about 1-2 hours of feeling absolutely shitty, and then (hopefully) you can sleep it off. I took like a three hour nap after scarfing down some food. My sister even said it’s ā€œthe most dreaded pregnancy test.ā€ I was like ā€œyou didn’t say that to me!!ā€ šŸ˜…

Are you allowed to have water before the test? I have mine at 7 in the morning tomorrow and I’m very nervous since it’s my first appointment alone.

It's rare that doctors make you fast before the 1 hour test. Sorry you had to deal with that.

I've asked a bunch of people, and the ones who have done the 3 hr said it was awful like you described. But everyone I know said the 1 hour was nothing because they didn't have to fast.

Yes! After midnight the day of the appt, I couldn’t have anything other than water. And I didn’t bring my water cup with me to the appt, so that could’ve been a mistake. I personally didn’t feel comfortable driving after my appt, so my husband did. If I HAD to, I was only a couple minutes away from home. You can always Uber if you have to! šŸ–¤

Hmm, odd. I don’t know since it was my first ever! Gah, even the three hour one is that bad? Lord I hope I passed the one hour!!

Avatar

Yeah I’m just alittle nervous since my mom had gestational diabetes with my little sister and she got really sick from it. My doctor also said that I have to fast so I was alittle nervous about it.

Avatar

I feel ya, girl! The good news is we’re over halfway there, so hopefully if we feel sick or anything, it’s temporary! Best of luck to you šŸ–¤

Thanks! How has your pregnancy been?

Avatar

Omg I’m 27 weeks and have my glucose test tomorrow and I’m so nervous! My dr office said that it’s really hard for most women and warned me that passing out or throwing up is common 😳 if you throw up you have to redo it tho so I’m praying I don’t. So sorry you had such a rough experience!

Avatar

I’m really hoping neither of these happen with mine tomorrow either.

You shouldn’t have to fast for the one hour test… you can eat a normal breakfast just avoid anything sugary as it can mess with results… and you should’ve been able to drink water before… the 3 hr test is when you fast.

Avatar

Well, I followed my doc’s orders, which was to fast starting at midnight before the appt. I’m sure clinics have different protocols for different reasons.

Avatar

if your Dr hasn’t told you to fast don’t!!! Just avoid sugary foods and drinks!! Mine told me with my first to eat some eggs, this time around I’m doing toast with some peanut butter and banana as that’s been a breakfast cravingšŸ˜…

Avatar

I believe my doctor also had me fast before but I’m not sure

Avatar

Honestly, up until recently, the entire pregnancy has been a breeze— except for being tired and of course dealing with the rollercoaster of hormones! How about you?

Avatar

most clinics haven’t went to the no fasting… they decided this was best course because people kept passing out or almost passing out

Avatar

That’s all good and well, but again, I followed my doctor’s orders.

I had really bad nausea up until 2 weeks ago with some terrible back pain but now I’ve been doing alright.

Avatar

oh man! I’m glad to hear it’s at least dissipating!

I failed my 1-hour test by 5 points a few weeks ago and now im scheduled for my 3-hour test in the morning. Prior to this pregnancy, I have been anemic, so im a bit concerned about how the fasting will go as I tend to get lightheaded if I do not eat on time. Wish me luck, I'm about to have a very late dinner now then off to bed. Appt is at 7.30a.

Avatar

Girl I feel that! If I don’t eat in a timely manner, watch out. Best of luck to you on your 3 hour test! Lemme know how it goes šŸ–¤

Avatar

@Jessica will do. I hope I pass, because im not sure what to expect after this.

Avatar

@Jessica I made it out alive lol. I actually took my mom with me because I wasn't sure how I would feel not eating or drinking from the night before, but my anemia was on its best behavior. I will say after the drink I did feel a bit nauseous, but the nurse said the feeling only last for 30mins. There were a total of 4 blood draws, and now my left arm is tired 😫. The results will be in tomorrow. šŸ¤žšŸ¾

the 3 hour only happens if you fail the 1 hour so most people don't take it.

Y’all— i got no phone call! So HOPEFULLY that means all is well!!
