I mean.. Gender is an amalgamation of several elements: chromosomes (those X's and Y's), anatomy (internal sex organs and external genitals), hormones (relative levels of testosterone and estrogen) Those are the main elements of gender.. hence why it’s called a gender reveal x
No that's what sex is. A dictionary definition, and a medical definition of gender includes the social parts of someone's gender, irrespective of whether there are two or forty-million genders :) x
Why would you not call it a gender reveal? To say what? ‘I’m not having a gender reveal because they may not socially want to be that when they’re older’ 😂😅 Also, are boy and girl not both gender? At a gender reveal are we not announcing if the baby is boy or girl? Both of which are genders? They’re not just ‘sexes’ they are genders 😊
This generation is fked 😂😂 honestly what would you want to call it ???? It’s ether going to be a boy or girl what else could the gender possibly be like come on stop with this nonsense
Gender is a social construct. So I’ve been wondering why everything in pregnancy is gender scan, gender reveal etc. cause this is the sex, not gender. I guess Sex Reveal Party never caught on with the masses as a name, in case people thought it’s a kink party? It’s weird to me to call it gender scan too cause it’s literally not accurate. I have made it my choice to use the word sex instead of gender at all my appointments. @Jae🌝 gender is not that, gender is culture, what you identify as, behaviours, expression and so on. Sex is what you describe, the biology of our body. @Paige baby can be intersex. So mindblowing how things are not binary, I know.
@Eve ok.. what are the genders? Are male/female and boy/girl both genders?
@Paige like I said, sex would be the word used rather than gender. You seem pretty upset by it. Maybe a bit of introspection as to why it's such a challenging concept for you. Like said originally, friendly discussion welcome. Let's not be rude. We're all mummies or mummies to be so should be on each other's side chatting and sharing things with the main goal of doing best for our babies 🥰 love to you Paige x
@Jae🌝 yes, those are genders. But the point I made that when we're having a scan it's literally the looking for genitals, so we're looking for the sex. x
I’m not gonna argue to stick to the terms here - use them as you wish, I don’t think anyone is going to convince others to change their opinion over forums. All I’ll say is the general concept to weave into your thinking is that as we develop who we are, we develop our deep internal sense of our own gender - based on norms, behaviours we see, the culture we experience. So in a way yes, all of us are born genderless- we’re assigned a sex based on our organs. But our sense of who we are beyond our reproductive organs grows with us with time. It can be a wonderful experience when we nurture and are kind with each other when discovering this for yourself/ your kid
@Jae🌝 bingo! Newborn babies are, as far as we're aware, genderless when they're born. They definitely have a sex, or are intersex (male or female), but their gender will become apparent as they grow up 🙌 that's why sex makes much more sense to use than gender reveal. 😊
Wrong. Babies have genders at birth. It’s your choice if you wish to raise them gender neutral 😊
In all honesty,I think it just comes from tradition and old taboos. Using the term "sex" in the olden days was very hush hush, so I think historically it was just easier to refer to it as gender and it was passed on from one generation to the next. And now is just a name we give it as it has had it for a very long time. 🤷🏻♀️
Yeah I'd agree it's due to prudishness and not wanting to use the word sex for babies. Related I am fed up of the "do you know what you're having?" question. It's creepy that everyone's first question is about my unborn baby's genitals, but its somehow completely socially acceptable?
Because there is only 2 genders so it’s a gender reveal ….
