Cats and babies

I have two beautiful kitties (brother and sister) who never hiss or scratch. They are extremely tolerant and love snuggles, especially the boy. They are very tactile and loving and always want to be sat on us being stroked - which we love. I have had a lot of family members warning me about cats and babies in terms of cats sleeping ON the baby and suffocating them! Our cats currently sleep in our bedroom in their beds / under the bed or sometimes on the bed…. 🫣Obviously step 1 is shutting the door so that they get used to not sleeping in the room as the baby will be sleeping with us (I’m due in September) but I am interested in anyone’s experience with this?

So I’ve got three cats who obviously before baby were in our room during the night. Loved it 🥺 had all the cat cuddles during the night and the morning.
But of course we have had to now shut them out on a night. They seem to be doing okay, still love me 😂 and they all sit outside the door all night alseep. I let them in as soon as we are awake for the day.

Our main reason for shutting them out is our kitten as she actually likes to lay on my neck and face 😂 Xxx

I'm probably a bit controversial but I have never shut my cats out since our baby arrived 6 weeks ago. Have I had any problems? Nope! One reason is that if I shut them out I know they will pull up our carpet and keep us up at night. The other reason is I know they won't go near her. They have showed no interest since she arrived and keep their distance, especially if she cries. One of our boys still sleeps on the bed as he did before she was born and he has caused no issues. If they go near her cot they are told to go elsewhere and they know it is out of bounds. Obviously its down to you but cats like quiet and don't like change, so they are unlikely to bother your baby. Just my opinion, but I know nearly everyone else will disagree! X

I’m wanting to let ours back in the bedroom. It’s just our kitten 😂 I might try it and see how we get on. Xxx

We will not be shutting out 2 cats or dog out but our youngest 11month cat has a habit of already laying on/against our faces so we have got a cot net just in case. Problem solved x

My two cats are completely uninterested with my baby. I was so worried as she was 5 weeks early and didn't want the cats to suffocate her but I also love them so so much and they sleep with me every night. However they won't go in the crib when she's in it. 12 weeks on and they'll sniff her head and walk away 😂 if she cries, one of them runs away. The moment I take her out of the crib, the other cat will go in there as its warm but never with her. I think it's something to monitor. I'm quite fortunate that they're not a fan of the Little one 🙈 x

I always feel the best policy with pets is to just be totally chilled and try keep things as similar as possible to the way they were before baby. We have two dogs and a cat, baby came along in November and cat and dogs have free rein as they did before. My little boy is now in his own room and the cat sleeps on his rocking chair which she loves and has done before we brought him home! Cats tend to be stressed by loud noises so it’s unlikely he’ll want to be all over your baby, but maybe a net would be a good idea as advised above 😊

I have a very loving cat! He's never once batted an eye lid at my little one. I know he'd never attack her but I do know he would cuddle up to her if he had the chance. He sleeps downstairs on a night, got a nice bed and lots of food to keep him occupied and he's totally fine. He gets free reign of the house during the day, and gets his time back on our bed then ha

It's completely up to you how you want to handle it, you could maybe get baby's cot set up and see if your cat is showing any interest and go from there?

that’s a great idea thank you

I’ve got a cat and he adores my baby girl, he still sleeps on my bed & never goes near her crib! Even if she cries it doesn’t even bother him he just watches me do the night feeds and keeps me company 🤣xx

I’ve got a cat and a kitten they’re have always been fine with 7month old. Never really bothered with baby at all, I was cautious at first but once I realised they’re arent interested in going near him then I relaxed more.
The only thing I had to watch out for was they would sneak in the pram and car seat if they weren’t being used but I just kept on moving them out each time and they got used to the fact the couldn’t sleep there and found other places to sleep then but even when sleep in my room they don’t sleep anywhere near the baby so I’m happy!😃

I’ve got 3 cats and the plan is to not change anything. They haven’t been shut out our bedroom and won’t be either. You know your own cat and what they are like so I’m pretty certain all of mine will find baby too noisy and keep distance. Obviously the situation will be monitored closely when baby is here but they were my first babies and I don’t want to upset them anymore than they already will be.

Our cat sleeps on the bed, always has, was no way I was shutting him out, that’s his bed! He thought still the baby things were for him and was absolutely disgusted when the new arrival came along 😂 he’s never gone anywhere near him, even now nearly 9 months on he avoids him!

Shutting them out can sometimes cause more behaviour issues as they're so used to one thing but suddenly all these changes! I was worried about the same things but i regret shutting out my 2 cats at night they needed me and i needed them😭 and they always kept their distance from baby because they didnt like it when she cried. As she grew they still keep their distance but their relationship is adorable! Honestly dont overthink it. Sometimes people just love to add to our worries.

I was thinking about the same thing with my cat boy. I was looking at amazon and there are like mesh covers over the crib things and I was thinking that could help a lot.

We had 2 cats before LO was born and we put up her cot and swing etc before she was born so the cats would get used to them but I put tin foil inside them so when they jumped in they wouldn’t like it. Needn’t have bothered. They keep their distance from her because she’s loud and occasionally smelly or sticky! The kitten we got after she was born is a different story, she thinks everything is hers and it’s a constant battle to keep her off things. LO is 18 months old now though so other than the cats waking her up (they get locked downstairs but one knows how to open doors so let’s them all upstairs!) there’s not really an issue

My cat used to always sleep with my daughter since he was a kitten and she was 8 months, never unsupervised but he never slept on her face, he’s tried getting into bed with my new born twins once and got told off so hasn’t tried again he now sleeps at the bottom of my bed and watches the twins sleep in there bed, he will sit in the window above there bouncers when there in them too but apart from that he prefers to stay away from them unless they are fast asleep idk if thats any help x
