Punishments?

My daughter has been throwing tantrums and doing things she’s not supposed to/are unsafe. I feel she’s too young to punish but I’m worried she won’t have the respect for me when she gets older if i don’t nip things in the bud. She doesn’t react to a stern voice and i don’t believe i should be tapping her butt or hand yet. What are you guys doing/think?

I am curious to see what people have to say bc I am having the same issue

Can you give an example of something she doing? We do natural consequences as punishment. So for example if you’re going to hit we’re not going to hold you, which normally makes her stop because she wants to be held. Throwing tantrums aren’t a bad thing, kids are learning how to handle feelings that they’ve legit never felt before. Obviously they’re not ideal but you have to figure out the root issue and work from there. Like if they want something they can’t have, redirect and offer them something they can have. I always say “ I know it’s frustrating not getting x but how about y. Y is really cool.”

yeah that makes sense! The tantrums only scare me for when she’s older and being in public during it. But one of the things she does is hits and it i set her down she does not care lol so idk what to do

I totally get that! Public tantrums are so overwhelming as a parent and your first reaction is to get them to be as quite as possible. The tips I’ve been given that I’ve seen worked amazing is take the 2 mins it would be to calm them down, validate their feelings instead of reacting first. So like if it’s wanting a toy, explain that it can be frustrating to not get what you want and then offer a solution, like letting them take a picture and say we’ll send it to Santa or grandma and maybe we can get it later. It also works as a list of when birthdays and Christmas comes around and people are wondering what they want.

9/10 kids are having a hard time not giving you one and punishing them just causes more issues.

Kids at this age are only exploring. If they are doing something unsafe remove them from the situation. If they are making a mess its all play. Saying no and removing them from the situation and switching to play is the best you can do. Kids this age do not need disciplining because all they do is because they are learning and exploring.

Definitely DO NOT PUNISH!

Hold the boundary then if she doesn't listen or throws a tantrum physically remove her from the unsafe situation. She's newly 1 year old, it's literally her job to test boundaries, explore her world, and throw tantrums. It's your job to keep her safe. Physical discipline/punishment isn't going to teach her not to do thing wrong thing in the long run.

My son is 1 and if he’s throwing a tantrum I will give him him a second and then embrace him and have him smell the flowers and blow out the candle 3 times (works every time) hold him and rock him and then explain the problem with his action or why he can’t have something once he is calm and redirect his attention
