Swelling

Please excuse my feet, but mums to be who are struggling with swelling what is deemed normal and what is deemed not normal?😱😔 I am really struggling with my feel and ankles swelling that I am now only just able to wear flip flops , it’s come to a point that my skin feel so tight it’s hurting 😔 not sure if it’s related but my hands have been swelling to but not as bad but I have been waiting up with a lot of pain and stiffness in my fingers, I thought this was due to doing to much around the house but the pain hasn’t subsided? Am I being an over paranoid new mum to be or is this something is should maybe be worried out? Always feel like a burden in theses situations😔

Might be signs preeclampsia
I’d ring the maternity

My feet are swollen like this, with swelling in my hands now also which started a few weeks later. I now have pain in my hands and one arm which I've been told is carpal tunnel. It's all so uncomfortable and I am hoping goes soon after birth!
It's worth getting checked but my midwife shrugged it off. The other signs to watch out for are high blood pressure and pain just below your ribs as that makes for the combination that they look out for.

You may have edema! Try cold water soak for 10 minutes tone if it helps x

You’re not a burden. I agree with Marvel’s post. Ring maternity. They won’t consider you a burden, it’s what they’re there for.

Please ring your maternity ward! Never ever think you're a burden! Your health matters just as much as your little ones

I’d get checked out just in case but if they say you’re okay, get some compression socks! I had super swollen feet when I was pregnant but I was all okay and the compression socks really helped

Like otters said, the swelling could be a sign of high blood pressure. Definitely get checked. The pain in your hands could be carpal tunnel, which is a common pregnancy symptom. I've had it since I was like 16 weeks, it's awful. I wear a brace on my right wrist at night which makes the next day less bad.

I would 100% recommend either speaking with your midwife if you can or calling your maternity assessment unit and explaining that your feet are very swollen. Swollen feet can sometimes indicate underlying health issues such as preeclampsia, so whilst it may be nothing I would recommend if in doubt always get it checked.

As a nurse I can reassure you that they definitely will not think you’re a burden, it is quite literally their job to check out symptoms like this and ensure it’s not related to anything that requires medical attention. When I was pregnant I had to ring my maternity unit a few times and each time I found every midwife I dealt with to be professional and caring x

I’d call and go and get checked. I hope everything turns out to be ok x

Keep them elevated as much as you can and drink plenty of water , the more the better. This helped me tons and the swelling almost down to minimal, plus keep and eye on your blood pressure. Hope it will resolve quickly xx

Get compression socks!!!

That looks like preeclampsia, you should speak to your midwife and get checked immediately. It's common so don't stress but you will be given medication to manage it.

This sounds like how I felt when I had preclamsia. Please talk to your doctor and get checked out.

I always went in to the hospital to get checked for preeclampsia when my feet swelled. Not to be grim but my friend just lost their baby at 6months due to it. It’s never a waste of time to checked x

Hi! I am a nurse and as everyone else said, this may be a sign of pre-eclampsia. Other signs are high blood pressure and visual disturbances (seeing flushing lights, blurred vision..) and protein in urine. I had swelling like this, and it wasn't pre-eclampsia, but I had very high blood pressure after giving birth and had to stay in hospital for 3 nights... the midwives will take this very seriously and will encourage you to be seen straight away. You are not a burden! 🙂
