Hi fellow teachers! Just wondering if any new mom teachers out there resonate with me.
My contract allows me to take one school year off following a school year where I took a maternity leave. This is unpaid, but my employment in the school district is protected.
Iโm probably going to do it and take 24-25 off, but I am surprised at how mixed my feelings are about taking a year off because I love my job and it fills me up so much. At the same time, I am having a hard time picturing how to mother in my off work hours when I also have to plan and grade. I love my baby and donโt want to miss a minute of her first year. Also, Iโm new to my school district and havenโt quite earned my place yet, so I worry about that.
I always thought it would be easy to decide and that I would be excited about a year off to spend with my baby, but Iโve been feeling gloomy because Iโm picturing a year of the ground hog day Iโm experiencing.

Boy can I relate!! I have been pondering this as well. But we cant afford it, mainly health insurance so that decided for me. I love my job too and it was very hard thinking of giving it up. But its one year, and they grow up so fast. You will have plenty of years to teach. Us teachers are great planners. Try planning activities into your week to break up the monotony. Good luck with whatever you decide. Just be thankful you have that choice. That is wonderful! ๐๐ฅฐ๐
Thank you! Yes the choice is a privilege and I recognize that ๐ฏ so true I have had a 12-year career behind me and many years left to teach in front of me. My baby is only a baby for a short time.

I decided to take an extended 18 month leave and Iโm new to my district. This is baby #2 for me and if I could go back in time and take more time off with #1, I would. Baby is only a baby for so long. ๐ฅบ Good luck with whatever you choose! ๐
