Planning ahead - first time home schooler

Good morning! I just had a baby in October 2024 (almost 6 months!) and I know that I want to homeschool him when the time comes. I have three step kids who all go to public school, so this will be brand new for our family. I know it's early, but are there any tips anyone has for planning ahead? We live in PA. Thank you!

You will love it. 🤗We've been doing homeschooling and worldschooling combination for 5 years now ! 🤩

Start understanding your school districts homeschooling policies (ours requires us to register then send in a letter of intent, quarterly reports and end of year reports). There's sooo much time you have, and just start immersing yourself in the homeschool world!!

Nice one Kailee.. I'm not in the US so this never applied to me. 😄🤭🤗

Yes, homeschool laws vary by state. HSLDA is a fantastic resource - here’s their guidelines for PA homeschool law: https://hslda.org/legal/pennsylvania I just had a baby in October too (congrats!) and am looking forward to having him join our homeschooling in a few years! 🥰

Yes... I know about the laws for each State. We lived in the US before my son started his homeschooling journey. All the best Lyz! It's an amazing journey to embark on. 🤗💛

You should be sure to have a well rounded curriculum, I was home schooled and it was great except my parents didn't teach me enough math or science and I have been behind since I was young which made it really difficult for me to finish out and get the testing done that I would need in order to get into college or trade school

Some states say to register with the letter of intent but it’s actually going against your rights, make sure you do your homework on your specific state. There’s many amazing books to help guide you and if you feel discouraged because it’s not the typical way these will give you the boost to knowing you’re doing what is right for your child and family. Everyone is different and all ways of learning / teaching are great just know what you decide is also great. I try to give my kids a well rounded curriculum on all subjects as well as their advancements. My kids ask me questions weekly and I put together a project just on that question to keep their interest and curiosity. I keep a teachers planner and their work just in case we move to another state that it is required. ✨
