You don't have to remove ear wax. It's best to leave the ears alone.

Wipe the outside with a damp washcloth, my husband's ENT told us to never put anything in our son's ears as you just push all the wax in and can compact it.

You do not. If the wax is sitting outside the ear, you can wipe it away. But you don't touch ear wax, it serves an important function.
I notice my sons increases a bit when he's teething, cos he picks at his ears when he's in pain, but I just ignore it.
