Weight gain

Has anyone else’s dietitian said to add an extra scoop of formula to their milk for weight gain… So 4oz of water and 5 scoops of powder? I’m just thinking wouldn’t this lead to dehydration? My baby is gaining weight just very slowly so they wanted me to try and up the calorie intake but I’m worried about dehydration or even constipation? We are on neocate for CMPA?

Surely that's not safe to knowingly do! I mean they are the "expert" as dieticians but we get told to never under it over scoop formula knowingly as it can cause issues! Xxx

Surely a whole extra bottle is the safest option? Sorry I'm a bit shocked you've been advised this! Xx

I’d just up the oz so do 5 instead of 4 x

@YazmynJade well this is what I thought so I’m now a bit confused tbf xxx

With 5 scoops of powder x

How old is your baby? Xx

@Hannah yeah so the dietitian has said 120 ml of water to 5 scoops of formula instead of 4🤯

@Bee 4 months old x

@Hannah baby won’t drink 5 oz of milk which is my issue x

How often are they feeding? Have you tried pacing it out?

@Hannah every 3 hours been told to by both health visitor and dietitian, 4oz every 3 hours and she sleeps through the night… they want her to gain weight before we feed on her demand 🥴

Well isn’t formula 1 scoop of formula per two ounces? That would mean 3 scoops for 4oz

Have you tried feeding every 2? And feeding in the night, my health visitor told me they shouldn’t go through the night till 6months + x

@Tamara not in the UK. Here scoops are a different size

Is it one extra scoop per bottle? Or just one extra scoop per day? Did she say why not add the extra mls of water as well?

@Hannah we’ve been told to let her sleep through as she doesn’t feed through the night at all x

@Giselle for 3 out of 6 bottles x

I wouldn't worry much about it and add the extra scoop with or without the extra water. You could also add half scoop to all 6 bottles.

I thought the ratios of water to formula were very important? Did you express your concern/ ask further questions about if this is safe? Maybe you can follow up with them and get more information?

Have you thought about early weaning? It can be advised with cmpa babies Also I believe neocate do a formula which helps babies gain weight faster

At 4 months, I would consider weaning instead. Not sure why the dietitian didn’t recommend this option 🤨

If her advice and the proportion of water makes you hesitate, why not add one extra scoop properly diluted and give bigger bottles? You could also add an extra bottle a day and would be almost the same.

@Giselle that’s true

@Caroline I did ask and she said it’s my choice basically wasn’t very helpful xx

@Emma-louise I didn’t know we could wean them early as she can’t hold her head up for long at the moment and ooo I might have a look at that xx

@Bee me either honestly I was shocked xx

@Giselle she won’t take anymore which is why they want to add calories x

I definitely wouldn't start weaning until she's meeting the milestones for weaning as without holding her head up she's at huge risk for choking etc. id go back and ask for more clarification on what to do

@Giselle dropping centiles but still gaining just very slowly… she’s not consuming enough but we physically can’t get anymore into her at all, hence why they wanted us to put an extra scoop for calories x

@YazmynJade yeah I’ll wait a bit for that… but she seams to be gaining just very slow so it means her centiles dropping x
