Making bottles

I’m embarrassed to even ask this 13 weeks down the line but how do people make bottles with just the kettle? I was using prep machine but we’ve decided to just use the kettle now. I’ve been boiling water and letting it cool then put the cold water in the bottle then the scoops of formula, however with no hot shot or boiling water touching the formula it won’t be killing the bacteria in the formula right? Not sure I’m doing it right. How do others do it with kettle only?

You should only leave the freshly boiled water to cool for 30 mins so it’s still 70 degrees and hot enough to kill bacteria in formula. Once the formula is mixed you then cool it. Nhs has good guidelines: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/making-up-baby-formula/

Don’t let the water cool in the kettle for longer than 30 minutes so that it stays above 70 degrees, then pour into bottle and then add the powder. Then cool to drinking level by putting bottle in cold water or running under the tap etc x

Nuby rapid cool has been a life saver for making bottles fast from the kettle - use an 1 or 2 oz of boiling water for hot shot of formula in baby bottle, then remaining boiling water into rapid cool and add to formula, bottle is ready in a few minutes

Thanks both, I feed on demand so struggling to know when I’d boil the kettle and get the timing of it right?

@Kareena thank you I’ll look into this, do you just need one? Then wash between uses?

Might be easier if you buy a flask to put the boiled water in (after 30min) I do that, fill the flask up so whenever I need to make a bottle it's quicker, no hassle of boiling every time, just need to cool it down in the bottle before giving my LO

If making a 6oz bottle, I boil the kettle and pour 3oz boiling water then add formula powder and stir. Then I would add 3oz cool boiled water that I store in the fridge in a baby bottle with measurements on it so I know how much to pour out and it’s ready to drink.

In the morning and afternoon boil a full kettle and fill up a couple of baby bottles and leave on the side to cool to use later as your cooled water. When baby is hungry just boil a small amount of water- powder in first then boiling water hot shot then lid and shake then top up rest with the pre done cooled water. Same as prep machine but without the machine x

Thanks everyone glad I asked! I’ve not been doing it right so this has been helpful x

@Kerry thank you! Do you find you have to wait on it cooling down? Or does half boiling and half cool boiled water just make it warm and ready to drink? X

@CeeCee thank you! I’m trying to remember how much boiling water the prep machine uses compared to the cool water, I’m making bottles of 6 oz so not sure how much I should boiling water I should put in e.g 1 oz boiling 5 oz cool boiled water x

For a 6oz bottle I do 2oz of boiling water then shake then 4oz cooled plus a little extra to match what the prep machine does with the powder volume- this a little warmer than the prep machine but my baby likes it, you could do 1.5oz if you prefer, trial and error! x

For a 6oz bottle if I do 2oz boiling and 4oz cool boiled it’s ready to drink. If I’m tired I do half (3oz) and half (3 oz) and then pop the bottle in a bowl of cold water when I’m changing the babies nappy and by the time I’ve done that it’s ready to drink. I always test it on my wrist before giving.

You can make the bottles as above and store them in the fridge for 24hrs... I've got 3 babies and I've fone this method with all of them. When my girl is stirring etc I just heat it up on the bottle warmer within minutes it's ready ❤️ this is also advised on NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/formula-milk-questions/

I appreciate you all, thank you x

I second getting a nuby rapid cool! Weve made all his bottles with it since birth using the hot shot method! So handy xx

If I know roughly when the feed is coming I make the bottle with boiling water and either leave to cool (max 2 hours) or put in a sink of cold water to cool quicker. But this can take 15 mins and sometimes that’s too long! lol For feeding on demand / when out for the day… I have a bunch of sterifeed bottles (cheap from Amazon) and each night before I fill them with boiling water at half the bottle size my little boy is taking. He’s on 180ml so I pour 90ml. Let them cool and add to the fridge. I then either boil the kettle (or if out use flask) Add the 90ml hot boiled water to the bottle, then formula. Mix. Then add the pre measured cooled boiled water from the sterifeed bottle. 50% boiled water and 50% cooled boiled water seems to make the perfect temperature for an instant feed. Just make sure you are using the correct quantities I’ll pre make 3 cooked boiled waters then use my Mam 3 part container for the powder. With a flask then that’s a full day out of feeds ready forquanti

Yes I just have one and I only use the boiling water in it rather than formula so I don’t need to wash each time as it’s sterile water. the hot shot of formula is made in baby bottle with boiling water then the cooled water from the rapid cool is added the the baby bottle. I feed on demand also but it’s usually 2-3 hours so I’ll usually make one up after the 2-21/2 hour mark if he hasn’t wanted before, but even so it’s only a few minutes to make with the rapid cool so it’s not been an issue for me x

Buy rapid cool. Life saver
