Potty training - smearing poo everywhere!

I’m hoping someone can help! I’ve started potty training my son and left his nappy off over Easter to try and get him on the potty and weeing was fine but poo he didn't really know what was going on. He then didn't want the potty so I've paused that for now but keep asking him. But he’s started putting his hands in his nappy and in some cases it's getting smeared everywhere which is really stressful. I have no idea why he’s doing it, is it out of curiosity? What can I do to help him stop it?

Is he constipated while doing these things? Maybe is a way to express that he is uncomfortable with stacked stool At this age some kids start to explore their body and private parts Draw his attention to when it is happening so he can stop I think you shouldn’t stop potty training as he may be confused now.

I literally started potty training for the 3rd time with my girl last week and at the start she kept doing the same thing and I had to explain to her nicely that it’s not nice to do that and she must sit on the potty if her bum feels funny. It stopped after 2 days but I think it was more of a comprehension thing to do with now poo’ing on the potty 🤷🏽‍♀️

Is it just smearing or is he eating it? Just wondering as he could have pica
