Low iron

Has anyone had low iron while pregnant, my midwife said mine was quite low and I got put on iron tablets however the tablets make me so sick, I’ve started taking them with food even though it says to take on an empty stomach it’s the only way to get them to stay down. My midwife did mu bloods again yesterday as she said they was pretty low before so if they have dropped any lower then they might have to look at an different option, will these effect how I give birth ?

I was anaemic with my first and anaemic again this time, I was told that if my iron levels didn’t go up before birth there would be a risk of needing a blood transfusion.

@Char that’s what she said to me just wasn’t sure if this had an impact on how I give birth xx

@Amy I have no clue sorry, my levels went up so my labour was fine. I’d presume it would be the same but they’d just have to keep an eye on how much blood you’re losing. With the tablets have you tried taking it with orange juice? x

I had low iron and had to get infusions. Baby was fine.

@Char ah I see, glad yours went up! I have literally just brought some today as someone else I know said about taking them with orange juice xx

I’ve been on iron tablets for both my pregnancy’s. During this one my nausea has been so bad. I’ve found it’s easier to take my iron tablets at night before bed, and then when my nausea kicks in I take some gaviscon. I hope this helps

Aw love, make sure you're also eating lots of leafy greens and red meat, they're rich in iron so may help pep you up a bit. Sorry to hear you're having a rough time!

I wasn't during pregnancy but after

I get anaemic outside of pregnancy & it’s usually really really low in pregnancy (including my b12) Tablets weren’t great, I got the liquid prescribed (tastes a bit coppery but in a drink you can’t taste it) I’d have them next to the bed and shot it in the morning 😅 then down a glass of water which I’d drink anyway to curb the sickness… However towards the end of my second pregnancy both iron & b12 were sooo low and my body just wasn’t absorbing anything so I ended up having to go to the hospital daily for the last 2 weeks of pregnancy to get transfusions (drip) of both of them.. was more annoying than painful tbh! Ended up going into labour naturally at 39 weeks, absolutely fine & no issues x

Following as I’ve been put on iron tablets and am yet to be checked again to see if they’re working I’m now 14 weeks, I take the every night before bed so I don’t know if they make me nauseous or not but I was told to take them with food but because I take them when I do I don’t xx

Ask for the liquid iron. I couldn't stomach the tablets either but the liquid one was fine!
