I’m gaining weight for no reason and it’s really getting me down. I’ve had blood tests and they’re all normal. My calorie count is right for my height/weight and I haven’t changed my activity levels. And yet each month it’s creeping up and up and my clothes are getting tighter. I’ve reduced my calorie intake a couple of times and it goes down initially but then goes back on the upward trend again. I honestly don’t know what’s going on 😩 I’m definitely not pregnant. The only thing that’s changed is I’m on a long term antibiotic but in the side effects bit it says weight loss not weight gain! I just can’t work out what’s happening. Can anyone help?!

Are you on any birth control? Xx

Are you absolutely sure your tracking calories accurately? Biggest reason usually is people are not realising how much their eating or are eating too much based on their activity levels

Are you on other medication ? Why are you on antibiotics ?

So antibiotics can cause an increase in candida in your body (candida overgrowth) candida can cause weight gain and water retention.
Try taking some probiotics and reducing certain foods.
Thanks so much to everyone who has commented, it’s been really helpful. With regards to calorie counting, I used an app for a month or so to track my calories and I weighed my food etc and it confirmed I’m eating the amount I think I am.
I’m not on any birth control but I am on mirtazapine and tramadol both of which I’ve been on for 5 years. I know they can cause weight gain but they haven’t up to this point and I’m not sure if they would suddenly start when I’ve been on them for so long?
The antibiotics are for recurrent UTI infections.
The Candida thing has really struck me as my gp check up did show I had Candida vaginal infection and now it’s got me thinking if it’s more widespread. I’ve been on a LOT of antibiotics over the past few years for various infections.

It sounds like you are doing everything right, I am in a very similar situation and was on and off antibiotics for a while due to UTIs since having my first (currently on them now) and feel pretty unwell when I have to take them.
I think I have candida overgrowth but right now don’t have the energy to do anything about it due to being pregnant and having a toddler.
It’s definitely something to look into, see if your gp can do any tests, it’s not really tested for as much in the UK, they can do vaginal swabs and stool tests but they have no way of really telling if it’s in your gut which is what then causes overgrowth.
It can be really hard to get rid and it’s mainly about starving it and keeping it at bay but there are some good Facebook groups I’m part of that offer advice and people share their candida friendly meals.

What’s your age? After 30 the body is different and is much more harder to keep the weight the same, so you need to work out and eat healthy, then alcohol add weight, lack of sleep, stress.

Speak to the doctor about it. It might be from the antibiotics, another side effect which is not listed in the prospect and you have it. Medicine can have different side effects for different people.

I'm thinking water retention. Lemon helps rid of it. If you like honey and lemon drink that. First thing on an empty tummy is good. If ure concerned about the calories in honey then just put lemon in water and drink throughout the day. Will probably help with the UTIs (did for me) cos lemon neutralises acid in the body.
Take evening primrose also.
Also consider stress. If ure cortisol levels are high then that will increase weight cos ull produce more sugars. I thought I was going thru pre-menopause or have high blood pressure or something but came across high cortisol and symptom for symptom was me! I'm so use to stress that for me it's the normal, even when it's not that bad of a day my body is still acting like I'm stressed. I've not had it tested and I find doctors are reluctant with certain things. I'm trying to manage it myself for now, until I can't.
