sma alfamino

I’m absolutely going to lose my shit.

For context my little girl is nearly 6 months old. Shes been diagnosed with coma since she was 3 weeks old. Since then she has bounced from aptamil pepti 1 to sma alfamino to sma althera back to sma alfamino. The issue is she still has a large portion of the cmpa symptoms with pepti 1 and althera, but she refuses to drink alfamino. We have tried EVERYTHING to get her to drink it and I’m about ready to call it quits and say she can starve. I’m getting so frustrated and angry and I don’t really know what to do. Because of how alfamino formula is the formula powder doesn’t fully dissolve in the bottle making it super graining and clogs up the teet. She will not drink it. I do not know what else to do. Does anybody have any tips or tricks to get the formula to dissolve or am I at the point where I should just let her not eat?

Hey, I'm so sorry you're having this issue. I had exactly the same issue with alfamino, my little one just would not drink it. We went back to Althera as the paediatrician we saw said as long as the blood in her nappies had stopped on althera, not to worry about the other symptoms.

However, we were told by the paediatrician to try the following with alfamino as apparently not many babies like the taste of it on its own-

Try putting some alcohol free vanilla essence in the bottle to sweeten the taste.

If that doesn't work, I was told that the strawberry nesquik powder can be added to Alfamino too to get them to take it.

I really hope something works for you, it is so stressful x

I just re read your post and seen about the teats clogging. There's a Dr browns formula mixer you can get that apparently helps with this. I've not tried it but what about one of those latte frothers, would that help mix it a little better? We've got one called aerolatte but you can get generic ones on Amazon. X

Hi! We found alfamino to be quite gritty too - in our experience leaving the kettle to cool for 30 minutes doesn’t fully dissolve the granules so we’ve been leaving the kettle for only 15-20 mins instead and this helps ensure everything melts. Know its said it can ‘kill’ some of the nutrients if the water is too hot but better to get some nutrients and food in her than none at all. Hope this helps. Otherwise maybe try a larger teat size so the milk can pass through x

sadly we have tried both vanilla essence and nesquik 😞

we’ve tried these too sadly 😞

I feel like I’m at such a loss, I thank you all for your comments but sadly this is all stuff we’ve already tried 😭 I think it’s time to throw in the towel

If she needs the alfamino but isnt taking it then i would ask the gp for neocate. Its an anino acid milk but i never found it grainy

Please look into other formulas. my baby refuses that one and now she’s on puramino and she loves it and thriving

Dr browns makes Y cut nipples for “thickened” formula. Faster flow so you’d have to feed her slowly, also I second the vanilla

Try a different teat and different amino formula Apparently neocate is really good. Id also look into how you're making up the formula to make sure the waters hot enough to dissolve it so using a thermometer etc to check it's the right temp will help

Avatar

There’s another formula called nitrogen that you could try, my little one is happy on that x

Avatar

Have you asked for a neocate trial

It really is horrible that formula. I dont blame babies who don't take it. I gagged too. Try mixing with Oat growing up milk for babies aged 1+ found in supermarkets. If they can have nesquik powder they can have that! But Neocate is defo better

I am using the tommee tippe prep machine with hot shot, and is dissolving very good 😆 i’ve been using since birth and had no problems with any of the formula!

Avatar

she was supposed to go on it originally, our GP has refused to prescribe it because she been given months worth of formula she hasn’t used. I have enough formula to open my own pharmacy. Our dietitian is now getting involved to make the swap

Avatar

I have the prep machine and have done it that way, I’ve also done it by following the instructions on the tin and by doing the hot shot method ourselves without the machine.

Avatar

we’ve sadly tried different teats, bottles, and I’ve made the formula in different ways and it’s still ended up grainy. 😞 I’ve tried requesting to change to neocate lpc from the GP and they refused, but the dietitian is getting involved to request the prescribe it.

Avatar

definitely keep pushing it, what's the reasons the GP is refusing?

Avatar

well the gp shouldn’t have prescribed large amounts of a formula before they knew it was suitable for ur baby so ud be telling them that and asking for a trial of neocate which she may actually drink x

Avatar

I received a call this afternoon from my GP saying they’ve received an email from the dietitian requesting they set up a repeat prescription and asked if I needed some prescribed now. Success 🥳😅

My 10 week old has just been out on the alfamino and I absolutely panicked when I see the gritty sand like white stuff after his bottle and he seems so so uncomfortable after grunting and fussing was happy on althera but he now can’t have the lactose or gluten I’m having the same sort of struggle he will drink it but the discomfort after is actually so upsetting what on earth do I do when he needs it ☹️☹️

Avatar

my baby girl has fortunately made it past this. She was moved onto neocate lpc in around may last year and was fine ever since. With the alfamino she wouldn’t take it at all and we got one of those coffee mixers to see if it helped, which it did a small bit but not massively. I hope your little one settles on something! If you’re little one is able to try neocate I’d recommend it
