Hi! I'm just curious to find out if any teachers have asked to go back to work part time (3-4d/week) and what their school said! I'm a primary teacher in a small school and all mums (including the head) are working part time. Before going on mat leave in Dec, I had a chat with the head about going back part time and I was told that they can't guarantee that and that it's hard for a class teacher to do that. They said that we'll speak again in May to see how things will be next year but I have the feeling that they won't agree on that which I find it very discriminating as all other mums who are in the leadership team can do. I also asked to possibly extend my unpaid leave for 3 more months and then return full time, but they need to find out if this can happen. Has anyone had similar experience with their school?

This sounds unfair. I work in a school and all mothers with young babies work part time, Monday to Thursday at least. I think you should stick to requesting part time hours and challenge them on the fact that you know they provide this to other staff members etc . Goodluck

I’m going in on Thursday this week to ask! A new law come out on 1st of April so that may go in your favour xx

What new law came in on April 1st? I am a secondary school teacher and wanting to work Monday to Thursday as well. I told my headteacher via email and then we had a meeting via online to discuss me returning to work. I am currently just working out my KIT days and that I will take in June and July. Hopefully I will return four days a week from September.

It’s for flexible hours! Xx because we’re asking after it’s come in it may go in our favour etc x
could you send me the link mentioning this law as I couldn't find it online..
I will try to stick on my request and hopefully I will get it..

I would contact your union. If you aren’t with one I strongly advise you sign up. They’re really supportive, know your rights and can guide you.
I’m currently on maternity but my school is closing… I’m with NEU and they’ve been great at telling me my rights and what I’m entitled to x
