Omeprazole and wind

So after months of colic, reflux and a CMPA allergy, my little one finally got given omeprazole and my god, I’ve never ever had such an unsettled baby! He cried all night in pain with terrible wind and I don’t think I’ve had any sleep at all. Did anyone else’s find omeprazole did the same? I don’t feel like I’m going to continue with it as honestly it wasn’t worth it at all 🥲

It takes a while for it to work and can cause excess stomach acid for a while before it settles. We tried omeprazol for 2 months before we finally gave up and tried early weaning as our dietician was asking us to as he couldn't keep anything down the reflux was so severe, and that's what ended up fixing it for us within a couple weeks of starting

Sorry but can someone confirm this for me, is lansoprazole same as omeprazole? Because I keep seeing omeprazole be prescribed for babies with reflux but my twins are on lansoprazole 15mg ?! I’m so confused!

We had the same issue with our little one - she was awful on omeprazole, they even upped the dose but it just wasn’t worth the pain she was in so we stopped it x

@Monika it's the baby safe version used before they're old enough for omeprazol it's essentially the same thing

@YazmynJade thank you!

I’m honestly petrified to give it again today and I don’t think I will. I will stick to the gaviscon 🥲

@Alex I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels like this. I genuinely don’t understand how a medication can unsettle a baby soo much, 100% not worth it

If it's causing too much distress it's not worth using! How old is baby? Xx

@YazmynJade he is 12 weeks old and we’ve switched to soo many different formulas. We’re currently waiting on puramino as there is such a huge shortage xx

Thing with cmpa is you need to stay on a formula for 6 weeks to allow their bodies to heal so all the switching will definitely be causing some issues (that's on the drs though for swapping so often) so when you do get this one stick with it for 6 weeks it'll definitely get worse before better but it does get better. Make sure you also have a dietician referral urgently to get their advice if you haven't already as the GP is useless and really not informed on cmpa in the UK they just follow a piece of paper for it x

@YazmynJade do you know when they can start omeprazole?

@Monika I think it's 8 weeks we had the L version from 4-8 weeks and then called the GP to say we are struggling to get it in him are we able to use omeprazol yet he said he was old enough so prescribed it x

@YazmynJade what form is omeprazole in? And what do you mean you were struggling to get it in him x

@YazmynJade can I ask what you used to wean? And how you went about it

@Katherine we started with single veg puree just two baby spoons a day worked up over a month to the equivalent of a 4+ pouch and then from 5 months started adding in a few spoons of other stuff like wheetabix and porridge in the morning for breakfast and just worked our way up to fill weaning after 6 months we took it super slowly and if there was a day he didn't want it I didn't push it

@Monika the lansoprazole was a tablet we struggled to cut them to the right dose and dilute them but the omeprazol was a liquid we would just give it from the syringe to him and then immediately milk after x

@YazmynJade thankyou, and how old were they when you started? My baby is 4 months now and have started with carrot x

@Katherine 16 weeks so 4 months we started the dietician asked us to do we trusted it was the right thing xx

@YazmynJade that makes me feel so much better Thankyou, he’s had purées for a week now and next week will start some porridge too x

@Katherine just take it really slow couple baby spoons a day and it'll improve the reflux in no time. Think at 6 months when he was on two meals a day at this point is when I really noticed it was gone xxx
