Hi everyone, just wondered what everyone’s experience was like with St Georges if you went there. Ive recently found out I’m pregnant and self referred there and thought it was a good hospital but i had a look at the CQC report and the maternity section was rated ‘inadequate’ for their maternity department only in August last year which is a bit worrying. Does anyone know much about this or should i look to be going elsewhere. Thank you!

I had a good experience there. I had my birth in the birthing suite as I had a water birth and it was brilliant. Got a huge room to myself. Honestly no complaints at all. Would go there again for my next. I was in the hospital by 9pm and left 12pm the next day as I wanted to be in my own home. I had a very “easy” births as births can go, no complications so I left when I was ready. But the staff was lovely and attentive.

I gave birth there in 2022 and am planning to again this summer for my second baby. I didn’t realise it had received a poor rating like that actually.
My experience was pretty good. The worst part was the shared post natal ward which was very hot and very loud, so hard to get a rest after having just given birth. But from my understanding this is how postnatal wards generally are in the UK so don’t think it would be any better elsewhere. The positive was that my husband was allowed to stay overnight which is not the case in other hospitals - I would’ve hated to be left alone, so I really appreciated it.
The nurses and doctors that I have encountered at St George’s have been really kind and seemed good at their job. I didn’t have high expectations for an NHS birth - at times I was waiting a few hours until the doctor was free to check on me or when it was time to be discharged, but I feel like that just comes with the free, overstretched medical care.

I’ve had a really good experience so far everyone has been really lovely and on the ball, but now I’m a bit concerned maybe I should change as well 🤦🏼♀️
Thanks guys! Your answers have definitely put my mind at ease. Definitely going to carry on my appointments as usual then and see how it goes ☺️

I also had a great experience there with both of my births! X

I just had my little boy in January there. I was under Pearl
Team and they were so lovely, midwife app sometimes took a while but honestly I expected it with all the strike etc going on. When you get seen they didn’t want to hurry you along they still took their time with you. Due to being high risk I was induced so went to Carmen Suite the two midwives I had there Sharon & Tannika were absolutely bloody amazing! They couldn’t do anything more for me if I tried- made me feel at ease and relaxed all time. I needed a C-section in the end and the whole team who carried that out were brilliant and explained everything so well. When I went to Gwillen Ward after I had a lovely midwife Becca and she too was amazing really supported me and helped me on my way.
All I can say is I had a great experience and every interaction was kind and caring and I would 100% recommend them. 🩵

Horrible experience I won't be going back again honestly traumatised they ignored me when I told them I had a fever left it then got an infection was in and out of Concious would tell me to shush and stop moaning honestlue it was so bar

I gave birth there in 2022 and couldn’t fault it, the post natal ward isn’t much fun but that’s probably the case at any hospital… now I’m about to have my twins there and because of being high risk we’ve had weekly appointments with the amazing twins midwife and the FMU. Can honestly say every member of staff we’ve ever had contact there has been great, and so kind to us. We’ve always felt in really safe hands x

I gave birth September 2022. Antenatal clinic wasn’t good at all I had multiple occasions where I had to wait 2 hours for my appointment.
I wasn’t referred for certain things I should have been, towards the end of my pregnancy I had to go to a different clinic and they apologised to me that things that been managed so poorly in the main hospital.
Delivery suite, could not fault them. My midwife was brilliant. Apart from 1 consultant who thought it was appropriate to come and talk to me when I was in labour and on my own because my baby was big and tell me about all these worst case scenarios which obviously stressed me out.
Post natal ward was absolutely awful. I felt that there was a complete lack of care and made it abit traumatic for me. I would be here for ages if I listed off the reasons why it was awful.

A lot has changed since that report, I brought it up with them. I’ve never waited longer than 10 mins at the clinic - I’m 34 weeks. Sometimes you can tell they are stretched.

I was at St George's until 36 weeks, when I transferred to Chelsea & Westminster. I live in between the two. I had an okay experience, but honestly I found the facilities at George's really grim. Dirty, old, hectic, often broken equipment. The birth centre also was closed a lot of the time at short notice due to staff shortages, and I was hoping for a water birth. I'm not sure if that's still the case. I found Chelsea so much better - cleaner, a far nicer environment, birth centre is lovely. The staff and midwives between the two were both good, no issues there. I gave birth April 2023 so was under Georges until Feb 23.

(NOT TO SCARE YOU, BUT THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE)I gave birth a few weeks ago, and if I’m completely honest I had a terrible experience to docs not know how many centimeters I was, to the constant vaginal examination, to the post natal wards, midwives not caring, so much unnecessary attitude even after the fact that I had a forceps and c section delivery, forcing you to get up and walk after 2 days. To my baby being kept in the neonatal until for up to a month and the nurses wanting to discharge him when he was (in my opinion) not fit to be discharged. I think the only thing that made it worth my stay were the student midwives in the post natal unit and some of the kind hearted nurses in the neonatal unit. I would say look around for other hospitals before making your final decision.

hey I think you were in the bed opposite me on the postnatal ward? If so, I really hope you and your little one are ok 🙏🏻 it all sounded really traumatic. I’ve been thinking of you and wondering how you are. X

Oh my goodness! Yes you were my ward neighbor! Little one and I are doing well. It was very traumatic, but I thank God we’re doing much better. It was so unfortunate I wasn’t able to say goodbye the day you left! I do hope you and the babies are doing well!

Has anyone delivered recently at st George’s and had any light to share? Im due for c section in 4 weeks and currently being transferred there, but i have not seen good reviews at all! Please help anyone!

hi Marian! I’m currently 33 weeks and considering transferring to C&W.
Can I ask how you went about doing it and was it easy? Thanks

heya. To be honest it wasn't super easy. I think I called their pregnancy hotline and also just self referred online and said I had moved closer (which was true, but I was also still close to Georges) and that I was really hoping for a birth centre birth and understood that Georges birth centre was often closed. I got an email from their head midwife telling me they didn't have availability for me, because they have to redo the booking appt etc. Bear in mind I was 36 weeks so even closer to the end than you! I emailed back and basically begged, lol, and they gave me a cancellation booking appt slot!
