My baby will be 4m on the 12th. He's not showing any signs of rolling over, and isn't swiping or trying to get toys or anything hanging from his play mat. I try to do tummy time with him and he either just lays his head down and chews on his hand for like 10 minutes, then cry's, or immediately starts screaming as soon as he's on his tummy. I've tried all kinds of toys and surfaces to put him on, he won't even do it on my chest. I don't know what to do, I'm willing to try anything other than just letting him cry.
I'm feeling so guilty about it all too. I don't know how to help him or if I should be worried that he's not even close to rolling yet.
He was almost a month premature, so I don't know if that would make a difference?

My daughter is like this too and she recently turned 4mos old. However she was born 2weeks premature and the doctor already told us that even tho in age she’s 4 mos she’s technically still not that age developmentally yet so that could be the same for your kiddo

1) every baby is on their own schedule and the fact that you care means you’re doing great!
2) some possible things you could try if you haven’t already: putting his little fists around things. He already has a grasp reflex, so you can try rattles, teethers, etc. it primes him to know he can use his hands. For tummy time, I do airplane tummy time (it’s as ridiculous as it sounds but it was in the wonder weeks app) where you put him on your shins while lying on your back on your bed and then lift them up so he’s “flying” while you hold on around the ribs. I also got one of those water mats. My baby does best when I roll him in and out of tummy time, which is also practice for rolling!

Same here! I thought rolling over was a 6 month milestone. Mine sometimes rolls from belly to back— looks like by accident. But has never rolled back to belly. He isn’t swiping at toys yet either.

If he can only tolerate tummy time for 10 seconds, then just do it for the 10 seconds and try to do it multiple times per wake window. Keep trying to get him to do tummy time on different things (pillow, exercise ball, colorful blanket, etc), and keep showing him new fun toys like crinkle paper, mirror, rattles, flashlight, musical instruments etc to distract him. And try carrying him around with his tummy down so he has to support his head. You can do side time which will also strengthen some of the neck muscles - when he’s on his back, rotate his body by his legs so he’s on his side - this can also help with him figuring out how to roll (but it’s totally fine if he’s not rolling yet!)

Rolling over is a 4-6 month milestone and you are correct if they are a preemie you go by adjusted age for milestones. Babies do stuff on their own timeline the milestones are just a guide for what most babies do but not all. My daughter just turned 3 months a couple days ago and started rolling like crazy out of nowhere. Your baby will do it when he’s ready! If he’s not into tummy time just keep trying. My daughter was doing the same thing for the longest. We sit her up on our lap and that also helps build strength. Once we started doing that she started doing tummy time a lot better. They don’t like it cuz it’s hard for them because their muscles are weak so they have to build them in order to not have such a tough time lifting their necks. Good luck 😊

I wouldn’t worry too much, because he will eventually learn to do these things.
Milestones are just general average guidelines on what to expect. They’re not really “goals” for your baby.
Babies will sometimes tolerate tummy tiny better if you put a pillow under their chest! Some just hate it no matter what.
Also, the rolling milestone is 4-6 months. He isn’t even 4 months yet!
Do not worry! He is perfectly fine ☺️
