Now, that being said, I have given my daughter popcorn a few times, but always in a very calm and controlled environment, 1 pc at a time and check her mouth is empty before letting her get up.
It's so funny that this pops up tonight. I just finished a bowl of popcorn. I think my oldest started eating a little over a year, but I watch her like a hawk and keep her juice nearby
I heard not before 4. I was eating some and she was super upset I wouldn’t give her any but it doesn’t seem worth the risk I think It is the most hazardous food.
Mine eats it all the time 🤪 she’s obsessed
Its honestly still hazardous even for older kids, but basically once they arent having sporadic tantrums is safer lol. The biggest risk beside the kernels is inhaling chewed pieces. Even if the stop actively choking, the inhaled small bits expand with fluid getting lodged in the spongey lung tissue and cause swelling in the lungs around them. (Super rough explanation)... but basically it's an incredibly complicated and risky surgery to remove said fragments and save the kids life. And typically you have no idea there is any lingering issue until hours after the incident. There was a whole series of videos I saw on TT & IG about this last who went to disney with her 4 or 5 yo and he had eaten popcorn plenty of times, but something happened that caused him to get upset and inhale rapidly while chewing then he seemed ok and later that night had to be rushed to the ER and was lucky to survive. Anyway, not trying to scare you. Just feel like its important to be aware of the risks.
