Autism?

So I just received my 4 year old child’s kindergarten report and it basically came back unsatisfactory. They have a doctors appointment tomorrow due to his eye and I was wondering if the GP / Paediatrician can assess whether or not if they have autism. Would 4years be too early to test?

Never too early to test. best to get a doctor's opinion. When I had some concerns the gp gave a referral for a pediatrician and they assessed my child. Turned out to be speech delay in my daughter's case. But I was told Early intervention is the best approach to take.

Definitely not too early to test- my son was referred at his 2 year check and finally got his diagnosis at 4.5 years old. If you can afford to go private you may be able to be assessed sooner though

Yes a physical assessment (eyes, ears, throat - in case of enlarged adenoids, speech) is important as this can all impact learning, including a developmental assessment that others have recommended above.

Also check what the teacher has recommended and get the paediatric referral. Consider getting advice from your local community child health nurse too. There are long waitlists in Perth for paeds so the earlier the better. All the best 🌻
