Can you use omeprazole and gaviscon together?

My little 9 week old is suffering from reflux. Not terrible but we've had 5outfit changes today.

I just read that apparently gaviscon is just to thicken the milk and not an anti acid. Which is making me think I should try omeprazole

Im just wondering if you can use the two together.

Thank you.

Are you just wanting to give it to reduce outfit changes? Or is baby very distressed as well?

@Holly well obviously it's not just outfit changes.

if omeprazol and gaviscon have been prescribed it's not because mum is sick of doing the washing it's clearly for a medical reason. yes then can lovely we used them both with our first for a while

What a ridiculous thing to say, mentioning the outfit changes gives context to the severity.

with omeprazol you'll need to weigh little one regularly to have the dose adjusted as as they grow their stomachs grow and the dose first prescribed won't be enough for them anymore. And my other warning is it will cause an acid build up (believe it's called an acid battle) for anywhere from 1-8 weeks so it can seem like things aren't working so stick with it and keep adjusting the dose and it'll eventually calm down. Someone I know had the build up for a week and then huge improvement my son was a good few weeks but he was also on prescription formula which is really thin for his cows milk protein allergy so that prolonged it kicking in. Oh and to add (I know people have strong opinions on this) when you wean it'll basically stop the reflux we weaned from 16 weeks as his dietician asked us as his reflux was really severe and he met all the milestones so she wanted us to try and literally within 2 weeks his reflux was so much better and by 6 weeks when he was having little meals twice a day it went!

some people get it purely for refluxing up milk without baby being distressed, and others get it because their baby panics every time it happens or is otherwise severely distressed. Which is why I asked if it was just the milk coming up being a concern as you only mentioned outfit changes to describe it rather than pain or distress.

Gaviscon works by reacting to the stomach acid and forming a thick foamy layer over the top of the stomach contents that's supposed to stop milk coming up. Omeprazole reduces that stomach acid and therefore makes Gaviscon less effective.

Omeprazole also has a lot of serious side effects that aren't particularly well understood but are being researched at the moment. So it's only worth giving if they are severely distressed.

You can give more Gaviscon at certain weights, so it's worth discussing that with your GP if you haven't already, as a higher dose will provide a thicker barrier. It's also the best option if baby isn't severely distressed and isn't constipated.

it doesn't give context to the severity 😅 it just says how many times the reflux has gone onto an outfit. If I didn't use bibs with my first we'd have ten or more changes a day, and she didn't need meds for her reflux because it didn't phase her one bit. Which is why I asked, cause if it isn't bothering baby a good bib and alternate Gaviscon dose is better than omeprazole 😇 x
