So I moved in with my partner and his large dog, now this dog would have growled, showed his teeth or barked at me if I try to get him out of the living room, away from food, any form of command from me normally ended up in him growling at me. I have been with my partner years now and from bringing baby home (1 week) he seemed to want to look after me? No growling just following me and baby around. But… today I tried to get the dog into the kitchen when I’d baby in my arms and he growled and then barked and growled as I put him out the back as I really don’t want him to start this behaviour around the baby. Can anyone give any advice? Or opinion on this please

Reward good behavior and crate him when there is bad behavior. Crate training let’s them know this is your space if you need to chill out and that it’s not acceptable to behave in our space a certain way

Try to spend more one on one time with the dog, its a huge upheaval in their lives right now. Keep their routine as much as possible. Speak to your vet or a behavioural specialist

I second crate training, it’s better for dog to have his own safe baby free space

Oh also medication! Prozac did my dog wonders
see he is 4/5 years old and far too big for a crate and there’s no way my partner would allow me to even try and crate him, I just fear for the baby, all I was doing was trying to move him into another room away from visitors as he is a massive dog and I know he’s floor them jumping on them

crating as a punishment is awful advice. This tells the dog that that is a bad space. Crate training is all about it being a safe space for them to go. Sending them to their crate for being bad does the opposite of showing them safety.

No dog is too big for a crate. They come in huge sizes they just get a bit pricey. But if a crate is a definitive no go maybe put up a baby gate so he has one room separated? This can be his safe alone time space. Rewarding good behaviour constantly is great. Even if he’s just laying down while you’re busy with baby, just say a quick “good boy *name*” and leave it at that. But that constant reminder that doing nothing means he’s a good boy will encourage it more often. Also if he’s a big foodie, treats when he’s alert and behaving will encourage it more too

What kind of dog?
he’s a breed of husky

Such an intelligent breed! I would get a session with a trainer to see what kind of thing they suggest. I have an Akita cross German Shepard and wouldn’t dare growl or show his teeth but I would never leave her with my little girl just to be safe not even for a couple seconds! Good luck x

I am no expert by any means btw. But what was the reason for putting him in the kitchen? We're people coming round? My big dog (who BTW has never growled or barked so may well be different) very much sees himself as protector or my baby. He certainly wouldn't want to be put away with people coming round. He likes to sniff them out and then settle nearby to keep an eye on strangers. I think he would be very unsettled if I tried to put him away with people coming.
Also i read online don't fuss the dog when the baby isn't around. Fuss them when baby IS around so that they are most comfortable with baby around. If you wait until baby isn't around and then fuss them, they will prefer it when baby isn't there and more likely to get jealous when they are.
But it may be worse speaking to a proper dog trainer.

Is he being put in a room when people are coming over and is he there for a long time? Could be because he gets stressed and he knows that hes going to be left there for a while? knowing hes a husky breed very intelligent very high energy do you have a garden at all? Maybe putting the dog outside in the garden instead of a room? Sounds like the dog is stressed when you do this also do you have a kong fill with peanut butter or liver paste? That might help husky are amazing breeds and amazing with children just sounds to me could be wrong sounds like the dog gets stressed and reason for growling or barking could be basically him saying no i dont want to be locked in that room maybe seek a training for advice be best xxx or a good thing ive done is baby gate up in living room and dogs can still see me but behind the gate? X
