How long does it take baby to adjust to new formula

Hey everyone! Unfortunately, my baby boy has just been diagnosed with CMPA. We have started to try the dairy free milks- tried SMA alfamino for about 4 days- tried it once a day to start and he’s really just hating it :(. Now we’re trying aptamil pepti and we’re getting a similar reaction if not worse! I don’t know if he will ever take to a dairy free milk- has anyone else had this problem? Also how long should we try the new milk for before concluding that he is rejecting it- does it take them a week/2 go get used to new milks? Are we giving up too quickly?

What was the reason for starting Alfamino and then swapping to Pepti? As it's basically a step back in treatment since Alfamino is completely dairy-free whereas Pepti still contains milk proteins, though heavily broken down.

As for rejecting the milk, you can try flavouring with alcohol-free vanilla essence or nesquick to get them to take it, then gradually reducing until they drink it without flavouring. It does take 4-6 weeks for milk proteins to leave the system, however it is recommended to trial a formula at least 2 weeks before determining that it's not suitable. Unless there are clear signs that the formula isn't right for them

Hey there! He was started on alfaamino first as this was completely dairy free but just cries hysterically whenever we try and offer it to him so the doctor thought pepti would be more palatable I guess? This was the alternative we were given but he seems to have the same reaction to the pepti 😟

With regards to the essence- any one in particular? And also any flavour nesquick? Also how much to add?

Yes, Pepti is supposed to be the 'nicest' tasting and smelling of all the hypoallergenic formulas. However, as does still contain some milk protein, just keep an eye on any possible symptoms. Many CMPA babies do settle on it however. My first did and we're currently trialling my second on it as well.

I don't know if any vanilla essence in particular, as long as it's alcohol-free, then it will be suitable. And any flavour nesquick would be fine. You would add just a few drops of vanilla essence, just enough to disguise the bitter taste of the formula. For the nesquick maybe start with a quarter teaspoon or so and see if that's sufficient for them to take it. You'd rather start with as little as possible rather than adding a lot and having them get used to a really sweet taste. If a tiny amount added doesn't help, you can always try adding a bit more

My baby didnt take to Nutramigen at all. Refused her feeds every time we tried. Was then prescribed Aptamil Pepti and my LO reacted the same way but this time we persisted a bit more, a few times and I’d say after around 2 days, she started to not pull a face and started drinking more each time. As cruel as it sounds, we had no option but to only offer the Pepti to her so she eventually realised that it was the only milk on offer so when she was hungry she would cry a bit after realising the taste but would continue to take a few sips at a time

was the rejection like a full on meltdown and crying for ages completely refusing latching on to the test altogether? We’re having no luck with any of them

Yeah it was, full on meltdown- literally all of that. She did the same with both formulas but the second one we insisted a bit more, by every time she cried and refused we would put it on the table in front of her, let her have her moment, distracted her with toys and tv then tried again and again. It wasn’t easy and we felt super cruel as she really seemed to hate it but after a couple of tantrummy feeds she got better x
