How often do you need to give calpol/nuerofen ?

Yes! Our baby is the same!!
He’s been going to nursery since 7months old, but he is constantly poorly. I actually joked and said he must be allergic to Nursery!
The nursery he is in won’t give nurofen, only calpol in an emergency circumstance (a temperature).
But nurofen works much better when bringing down a high temp for us.

Nursery worker here and honestly, you can expect this for the first 6 months. Usually though, those who start as babies = healthy preschoolers as they’ve had that early exposure and time to develop antibodies etc. It is BRUTAL but it doesn’t last forever! My son started in Feb and is only just at a point where he’s not constantly sick aha.

I would say though, unless the temp is high or creeping up to it, you don’t necessarily ’need’ to give medicine. As a setting, my nursery won’t administer unless over 38°c because fevers aren’t always a bad thing. Sometimes they’re the most effective bodily response to fighting viruses etc and treating them just prolongs the virus (obvs if temp is beyond that then certainly give meds - I also find Nurofen works better than calpol but ibuprofen is harsher on their kidneys & liver than paracetamol which is why nurseries stick to calpol) xx

We had this with our eldest, felt like something every week for 6 months or so then it eased off. He is 6 now and has not had to have 1 day off from school in 2 years , and never needed time off from pre-school either. I know some of it is luck but all those bugs when they are babies make it easier for them when they are at school!

Thank you for responding ladies! I thought I was on my own because I understand all babies get ill but the frequency was still a mystery to me: glad there is hope at the end of the tunnel lol.

Yes I find calpol doesn’t seem to do anything for my girl even after an hour so I always give nuerofen now. should I be sticking to calpol ?

Hey lovely! No, there’s no need to stick to a particular one. I give my little boy calprofen (or a shops own brand ibuprofen) because it does work better for him than calpol/paracetamol. I just meant that the reason that nurseries will generally only administer calpol and not Nurofen is because paracetamol (calpol) isn’t as harsh as ibuprofen (calprofen/nurofen). If you take it in though and sign in for the day, they should do it. If I sign it in, they’ll administer the calprofen, they just won’t stock it themselves xx
