Toddler ear pain?

My 3 year old has had on/off ear pain for a couple of weeks now. Took him to the Dr, said there's no infection, maybe he's getting ill and it'll settle. But he hasn't been ill and it's still giving him pain, I give.him calpol occasionally, any advice as to what else it could be?
