Hi all!
My little boy was initially prescribed Gaviscon for reflux and it worked really well, the GP has changed it to Omeprazole a couple or days ago as they prefer to not use Gaviscon as a long term use medication which is fine! However, I'm really struggling to get him to take it, it's like he almost panics and starts spitting it all out and won't swallow so he's barely getting any of the dose.
Has anyone had similar or any tips/tricks to help? He is EBF and don't want the horrendous reflux/sickness to return๐ฅน๐ค

If you have Instagram id recommend looking at this page. Most times there a root cause it's not usually as simple as just reflux something usually causes the reflux. I'm my little girl's case it was tongue tie and milk allergy causing reflux symptoms. So once you rectify the root cause the reflux will usually stop

the GP seemed to think it was my oversupply and fast let down so he is gulping a lot and struggling to manage the wind that comes with it so everything was just coming back out when he was violently burping. It was either try the medication to help him until he matures a little and can manage better or stop breast feeding which I didn't want to do x

How long had your little one been on Gaviscon if you don't mind me asking? We have had it for a few weeks and was wondering how long they can be on it for!x

I have this issue too, I've found lie back breastfeeding helped the let down slow a little more

it would have been 3 weeks, then we had our postnatal check and they've changed him to the omeprazole, GP explained it wouldn't cause constipation like the gaviscon which is a plus as my little boy was starting to struggle x

@Sophie thank you. This is interesting as we have had it for about 4 weeks now and no mention of changing from GP. Just prescribed laxative too! I will mention to GP I think x

I suppose each GP will practice differently, I'd say I'd rather have my baby on just 1 medication, but at the moment he's not really taking the omeprazole so we might end up going back over anyway! X

My little boy has been on gaviscon for 12 weeks, don't need to change to anything else x

We were on Gaviscon for around 6 weeks, then moved onto omoprazole but not because it had been 6 weeks, just that we needed to try something else to help.
We were also on a daily laxative with the gaviscon as constipation was awful.

I had this exact same issue with omoprazole!doctor prescribed him both gaviscon and omoprazole straight away. Trying to give him the omoprazole was traumatic for both of us. The second a tiny bit went into his mouth he'd stiffen up, start screaming, coughing, refusing to swallow. And I could see the liquid at the back of his throat he'd be gagging and choking. I was terrified he was going to genuinely choke on it or inhale it cause he'd be inconsolably crying and gasping. I called the doctor and she told me to no longer give him the omoprazole. The gaviscon is easy as it goes straight into his milk. But he's on daily laxative due to constipation so kind of feels like we traded one issue for another

@Steph just following the advice of my GP x

has the omeprazole been better? Do you manage to get your little one to accept it? X

exactly how I'm feeling about it all, I might have to go back to gaviscon and get them to prescribe a laxative alongside, with breastfeeding I was having to mix the gaviscon with water and give mid feed via a syringe so quite messy, like I said in the original post it was working great but was told by my GP it's not recommended for long term use so here we are๐ . You're right though, it definitely feels like trading one problem for another x

I think the omeprazole has helped with the discomfort of reflux. But he was never sick on gaviscon whereas he's been a bit more sick on omeprazole. Only been on it for 1.5 weeks so far so hoping it keeps improving.

@Sophie we are currently using lactulose with our little one alongside gaviscon and it's a nightmare tbh. It's 2 Syringes of 2.5ml a day and is really sticky! It's taken us a while to work out how to do it without him spitting it and needing a wash and change of clothes. Not sure if there are different laxatives they prescribe but you may find that just as traumatic as giving the omeprazole ๐ซ . I find it all such a minefield!x

Feels like we should just see how we go with the omeprazole and if things go back over we will go back to the gaviscon, just hoping he grows out of it soon๐ ๐ค. The lactulose sounds a right carry on
