Infacol and reflux

Just wanted to share incase anyone like me didn't realise - Infacol can make reflux much worse! This is due to orange oil in it being acidic. My little boy has really struggled with his wind since birth, he would arch his back, go red, cry ect... Trying to toot. Maybe 4 weeks ago we started with infacol and it has made a big difference for his wind. He passes gas much more easily and burps more too. However, he never used to spit up hardly and over the last few weeks he's starting being sick 3-5 times after every feed, large amounts of watery sick and was becoming very fussy on the boob. last night was pretty bad and after sleepsuit number 3 I was having a Google and I came across a lot of articles and personal experience of infacol making reflux much worse. We haven't given any doses today and we also haven't had any vomit! We've just had a tiny amount of spit up with a burp after feeds!! He's been much more settled on the boob too. Definitely worried his gas will start to trouble him again but I'm so pleased his vomiting has reduced! Hope this helps somebody ❤️

What about gripe water I believe it's called?

As far as I'm aware that doesn't make reflux worse 🤞

I meant that it might help with wind instead

I heard this too and stopped using it. I read it’s to do with the orange flavour which causes more acid 🤷🏻‍♀️ we stopped it too. Still use gripe water every so often which I haven’t noticed it’s made the reflux any worse

We use Tesco own anti colic and it works well for our little one x

I had this same issue when I used it. We were using it to treat my boys colic/wind. He got much better but then the trapped wind changed to silent reflux. We could hear his milk coming right back up then he'd swallow it again, gag, cough and cry inconsolably. I mentioned it to the pediatrician and she recommended we stopped using it, and she prescribed Gaviscon to treat the reflux. He now doesnt suffer with trapped wind/reflux anymore, but the Gaviscon has made him constipated so now he's on Lactulose stool softener aswell! So we basically just keep trading one issue for another, it's exhausting and I feel so sorry for my LO😩x

We had the exact same issue! Her wind became so bad after we stopped using it, so have since been trying gripe water which seems to have helped a little bit x

We experienced this with my eldest, and gripe water and dentinox also made her projectile vomit straight after giving them, so we haven’t bothered with anything this time. I find as they get older they become better at bringing up any wind. It’s definitely easier to burp this one at nearly 8 weeks than when she was a couple of weeks old. Her reflux does seem to be lessening too, it might be a projectile vomit every 2-3 days rather than the several times a day it was a few weeks ago. I do think we have a tendency to over medicate things and a lot of these issues will improve as our babies get older, their bodies are just underdeveloped. Reflux is a nightmare though and I don’t blame anyone for wanting to ease it!

ah right thank you!

it is exhausting and so sad to see them hurting 😭 when my little one chokes or strain to toot he looks me in the eyes too like help me and it breaks my heart. Our gp was reluctant to prescribe gaviscon due to the constipation. Hope things settle for your little one soon

this is my worry! I've heard good things about dentinox too

Avatar

I agree it's easier to get burps now! He poops easier too so it's all improving week by week! He throws up the gripe water almost instantly too

Gripe water is way better. Noticed with infacol my baby was more unsettled and dehydrated. With gripe water it did make my babies poo so don’t give the recommended amount at first

Gripe water is so much better!!

Just adding to this, my baby couldn’t have this due to worse reflux symptoms and when it came to calpol and nurofen after babies vaccinations we had the same issue!!!! Doctor had to prescribe paracetmol suppositories in the end.

Orange and strawberry flavoured items would end up projectile vomited in this house x

oh no! I'll keep that in mind regarding Calpol;

Hi Maria, how do you feel your latch is with breastfeeding? Number one cause of gas is poor latch. A small tweak to positioning may be all it takes to make it better.

we're using nipple shields so not good 😞 it's got worse actually quiet shallow because the nipple shield has such a big teat he can't really get a big mouthful. His latch used to be much better but I think he's got lazy overtime. He also would occasionally latch without the shields until about 10 days ago and now he's having none of it 😞 we used them because I have flat nipples and the midwife just got one in the night on the day he was born 😞

AHH ok. You may need to get a different size nipple shield if that's the case. Here's some info about nipple shields and also feeding with flat nipples (shields shouldn't be required just because you have flat nipples) https://laleche.org.uk/nipple-shields/

If you want more feeding support, I highly recommend La Leche League! https://laleche.org.uk/find-lll-support-group/
