Sippy cup

I’m struggling to get my 12 month old to drink his milk/water etc. from a sippy cup and not a bottle

What can I try?

Could be flow. Just use a water bottle or an open cup. My oldest only drank water if it was in a evian bottle the boy uses a flip up one but an adult bottle so the fluid comes out easily. Only used a sippy cup without the lid as liked the handles

how did you get her to drink from the straw? I find with my LB he just chews it

my kiddo has a cleft palate so she can't use a straw but I've seen people who start straw drinking by sucking straw to get liquid into the straw and then pressing it with their finger to stop flow and then placing it in baby's mouth

I've also seen people who squeeze the box til there is just a little bit of juice to get them to start sucking and once they start to suck then to push more in

just show him by drinking out of it routinely. The flow on those aren't loads so it might just be that because it is hard he doesn't think he should suck on it. We did a lot of drink from various bottles and then drinking from Mama's bottle

I removed the inside straw, so it's the same motion as using a bottle.
I did do some practice with a regular straw. Dip it in water, cover the top with your finger to keep the water in the straw, put the bottom of the straw (the part not covered with your finger) between their lips, and slowly move your finger to let it flow. She got the idea rather quickly.

If your baby associates a traditional bottle with drinking he won't automatically think to drink out of a sippy cup. Have you used an open cup or similar in the last 6 months?

we’ve taken the lid off the sippy cup and he’s ok with that but spills a lot so not sure how much he’s actually drinking

Have you tried the straw trick? Where you put fluid in the straw and hold you finger over the hole at the end to keep the liquid in the straw. Then put the straw in your kiddos mouth. When they put their lips around the straw release your finger off the hole so the fluid falls into their mouth. Helps teach them to drink from a straw.

We also use the honey bear cups on Amazon because those were easy enough to squeeze water through the straw.

We also gave our daughter cups during bath time so she could practice drinking from an open cup without making a mess.

Overall, it took a while. My daughter chewed the straws, pulled them out of the cups and played with them but we just kept offering it and now she loves water.

As others mentioned too - modeling. Drink from the cup and show your child how to do it.

I use Zak cups what I did to teach him to drink from a straw is I use straw cups everyday and everytime he was thirsty I would give him mine and show him how to drink it took a little while to learn but it helped him out a lot

Avatar

But it took him longer to find out that zak straws you have to suck hard so I got one that didn’t have that and would teach him how to use the harder to suck straws

I got told to not use a sippy cup and only use straw or open cups to make it easier for them later on. Have you tried a straw cup? I used this to train my little on it https://www.amazon.com/Special-Supplies-Squeezable-Assistive-Container/dp/B086J188MD/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_pp?crid=2D4FXNIRG05UB&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.dL0jxsqCaWHV6ZjWuweU8flYkvt1fkWiO3KFddcz3dx9jDzBZmPerYGR52BtyzvEADHL82ZgFPVHQ_wROrP66jva2sbownpzKxAqAgh8yLKfpQUWGCLRbnAD6J9MDxZG0IvmyLOhE-80jf_wromGGaeBVuFFpSko26bahFIu_z5iu3bXtJrnOU4ZWpqGGkprP-9Mw834lesN16iO-J1cWQ.cUFcCBLtg_biJb-4PL7ZPxqCtOyKQXiV_MyI_st5viQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=bear+straw+cup+for+baby&qid=1723835026&sprefix=bear+straw%2Caps%2C115&sr=8-3

You can squeeze so water/milk comes out and he got the hang of it really quickly!
