QUESTION FOR UNI MAMAS👩🏼🎓
hi mamas, this is a question to mums who are currently studying at uni / have studied at uni with a baby (open uni experiences and on campus uni experiences please) 🩷
i have a 6 month old, and my maternity leave ends at the end of september - so i’m due to start working in october. i really don’t want to go back to my old job - i was extremely mistreated and they’re very untrustworthy. the pay is also RUBBISH! i also don’t just want to get a random job somewhere just to pay the bills. i want to start a career now i’ve got my family.
my worry is, and this is a question i’d love to have answered, how do you afford it? i know i’ll get student finance but how much even if this if you’ve got a baby? my plan would be to do an online uni course and then get a part time job somewhere at an office or restaurant/pub until i’ve finished the course. once i’ve finished the course, the plan would be to hopefully find a job suited to my degree and earn some better money.
i would love to hear about people’s experiences, how doable it actually is and the money side of things is something i really need to know about too.

I got pregnant in my second year of uni and luckily by that time I was doing it online. I did a law degree and it was very difficult for me. I worked part time in a warehouse until I physically couldn't. I eventually had to claim benefits while at uni but they just deducted my SF payments from that. It was difficult but doable. If you have enough support around you then by all means go for it! Some unis are more supportive when it comes to having students with kids so I might be worth looking at what they may offer in terms of support if it's extra time for exams or bursary possibly. I don't know how much SF can give you when it comes to having a child because I started before I gave birth to my son and they didn't let me change it but I think you do get a little more than normal. I had roughly 4k for my last year of uni because it was online. There is a SF calculator that shows roughly how much you could get so might be worth having a look x
If you decide to do it, good luck💕 enjoy it. It will be difficult at times so please look after yourself and ask for help if you need it. Uni's are good when it comes to help with mental health so please don't be scared to take it x
