I am finishing my 18 month maternity leave with my first in a few weeks. I am recently pregnant again. I originally wanted to be a stay at home mom until my LO is a big bigger. However I need 600 hours to go for my second maternity leave. Would you choose to be a SAHM now or go back to work for a bit to take second maternity leave paid?

That really depends on your financial situation - if your partner makes enough, or you have savings to get you by and you want to stay home throughout, do it. If you need the money, make sure you get those 600 hours!

If you can squeeze in 600 hours before the baby comes/and you are able to secure childcare temporarily, i think it would be beneficial to go on an official maternity leave so you can get some form of payment while you are off!

If you have the option, go back to work for the few months so you qualify and take another mat leave. After the second mat leave make the decision to be a SAHM. Financially this makes more sense, but that is just what I would do.

Is there a way you could look at having a remote job? I know it will be tough but if you do need the money, you can still be at home while getting those hours in

I'd try to go back too. 600hours isn't a full year if you're working FT and then at least you will get EI again which is like free money for a year that you won't get otherwise. I mean financially if you don't have to then don't but you wouldn't have been working if you didn't need the money before you had the baby then, you know what I mean?

I’d try to go back and get the 600hrs or if you and your partner can live off of their income alone then I say stay home.

I'd go back for the 16 weeks of full time (40 hours/week) to qualify for EI again so you get paid for the 2nd mat leave, then be a SAHM. That way you have some income for the next year. I just did that, got just over 600 hours, and am due on Monday!
