Getting the copper coil straight after birth

Did anyone get the coil straight after giving birth? I’ve been suggested it and definitely considering it when I give birth as I defo don’t want another baby for at least a few years now 😅 let me know your experiences please 💕

If breastfeeding there’s a slight increase in perforation

Best birth control I’ve used by far but did end up with a slight zinc deficiency and periods were a bit more painful

I had it ten years ago, not after birth. Periods were definitely more painful and unfortunately I was one of the unlucky ones that got pregnant with it in. It fell out of place. I think if you follow the schedule for getting it checked to make sure it’s still in place you should be ok. I never got it checked and didn’t check it myself so that could also be why 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve had it before, no experience of straight after birth but in general, it didn’t work for me. My normal 4 day periods got extremely heavy, lasted about 10 days and I would be in so much pain it would make me double over. I stuck with it for just under a year as my GP kept saying it would get better but it never did so I had it removed x

Not had it after birth as I haven’t had a baby yet but I did have it for 5 years and it was perfect. Cramping initially for a few days but then had regular normal length periods after that. Never had any issues personally and will be getting it again once baby is born x

I had the mirena after my first birth which was fine the first three months then I was constantly spotting between periods. This time I’m getting the copper coil on Monday (9 weeks post partum) hopefully it agrees a bit better

Copper coil fucked me up. I had the worst periods with it!

You're not allowed to have it for at least 6 weeks after birth I believe! As i had one before pregnancy and want one put back in, so was told this recently

Avatar

my mum thought I could get it in on the same day 🤣

I feel like I definitely hear more negatives about it than positive

I’m getting back on the Mirena IUD after I give birth to baby #2 (due in December). I believe you gotta wait the 6 weeks check up.

I won’t be having another 😂 my periods got heavier, seriously painful, lasted 10 days compared to the 4 they used to. It was soooo painful getting it put in and I got pelvic inflammatory diseased and was poorly for weeks 🥲xx

Just had a consult for mine and was advised to wait until I’d had two periods (not breastfeeding, had first one 7 weeks postpartum).

I had the implant which I hated and went on to the copper coil. I was really happy with it and, for me, was far better than taking the pill and the side effects I had. Equally had friends who didn’t get on with the coil. I’m looking to have one again when I can and able following the arrival of my little one.

Avatar

yeah honestly the pill turns me into an absolute psychopath 😭😭 I want to try the coil because I don’t get on with hormones at alllll but I feel like I hear a lot more negatives that positive

Avatar

I hear so many similar stories 😭 not sure if it’s worth the risk x

Avatar

I can understand that when you’ve heard people’s feedback. I know it’s not really helpful to suggest, but trying it for a few months, you may find it works well for you x

Avatar

I know some people that absolutely swear by it though! X

contraception affects everyone sooo differently. Until you try you can’t go based off others individual experiences. No contraceptive out there has significantly more positive reviews than bad. You need to try, and find out what agrees with you. I was scared after hearing lots of negatives but personally on my experience it was like I wasn’t even on contraception. I had average heaviness and 4 days total periods, on the dot every month. But my biggest reason for choosing was to have no artificial hormones. And I came out of depression, didn’t pile weight on or get spotty, and didn’t affect fertility at all like a lot of them can. Do what you feels best for you, but don’t be swayed by negative stories, cause yours could be great. Nothings forever either so if it doesn’t agree with you you can have it out. At least you’ll know xx
