Has anyone had their therapist extend their disability in California. My obgyn won’t extend my diability anymore.

OBGYN was the original Dr who started the claim. Not sure if my therapist would need to make a new claim. I’m being treated for anxiety and PPD.

I just had my 6 week postpartum appt and my ob said she could only extend my disability by 2 weeks but my therapist I've been tlaking due due to anxiety and ppd can extend it more if I needed it. When I talked yo my therapist, she said she could extend it, but it won't be covered..? Idk how to get it paid!! It's all so confusing

I have not personally, but I work in HR in CA and have seen therapists taking people off work for mental health reasons after the obgyn won’t extend the time off. Time off related to PPD is covered by California Pregnancy Disability Leave. The note doesn’t have to come from an obgyn… it can come from another qualified provider.

Thank you! I’ll have to check with EDD to see if I would still get paid it my therapist extends it

It just has to come from a psychiatrist I think. Not a psychologist. But it’s my understanding that you can extend up
To 52 weeks in the state of California.

I think you get 8 weeks postpartum of partially paid leave, and then another 4 weeks of unpaid leave. From Google:

California's Paid Family Leave (PFL) program provides partial wage replacement for new parents to bond with their child. PFL can be combined with other programs to provide up to 12 weeks of paid leave after childbirth:
• State Disability Insurance (SDI): Provides about six weeks of paid leave after childbirth. SDI leave can start at 36 weeks of pregnancy and continue for six weeks after a vaginal birth or eight weeks after a C-section.
• PFL: Provides up to eight additional weeks of partial wage replacement after SDI ends. PFL can be taken right after SDI or at any time during the baby's first year.
• FMLA/CFRA: Provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave.
PFL provides 60% or 70% of an employee's pay, depending on their income, up to a weekly maximum. Low-income earners who make one-third of the state average wage receive 70% of their wages

Yes, I had mine extended by my Psychiatric NP and received payment from EDD without any issues. They should send in a noticed to EDD stating that they are taking over your care and that’s it. There may be some delay while documents are processed, but they will back pay you.

I had mine extended through my therapist and it was still covered under the same disability case!

Not all therapists can do this. Psychologists (doctoral level therapists) can but MFTs and LCSWs cannot
